And I say it is lame. Professionals go where jobs are, that is what makes them professionals.
I guess there are no head personnel jobs in Texas. Oh wait, he has one now.

GM>VP of Scouting

BTW - according to your logic, someone from Texas would prefer a job in say, Houston to one in say, Miami as well. Is that really true? Houston is one of the blandest, ugliest, and lamest cities I've been to whereas Miami is pretty awesome. Help me understand that.

Oh, I thought you wanted to have a "grown up" conversation. My apologies.

It was a serious question. Let me rephrase -- why is Texas different from anywhere else -- most people resist moving from their home areas. I just don't see why someone like Ireland who likely spends most of his time on the road anyway is going to be so fired up on being home in Texas.

Maybe it's the culture. Maybe it's just the "home area" effect. But it's not a lame reason at all. It's just one reason, among many, that he might want to stay here.

You're faced with 2 scenarios:

1. The highest possible position in your profession that is located where your family is.
2. A slightly higher position that is not located where your family is.

It's not lame to choose the former.

Why is BP hired in first place? To make the miserable Miami team better, correct? So, how is he able to turn that team around with his philosophy without him making certain decisions? If his formula for success isn't being employed due to devoid of "final say", why was he hired then?

that's is why he will be bringing in personnels that share his philosophy and approaches on building and running a football team i.e. parcell's guys(people that he trusts and have worked with before).

But in your current position, you spend a ton of time away from your family anyway. you move the wife and kids with you. How much time do you think Ireland really has to spend at mama's house anyway? What's the diff? He can still fly to Dallas as much as he wants.

Wow... they could end up with about 6 picks in first 2 rounds and an extra one for next year or one later one this year.

Its the smart move. Parzini was always smarter.

Now you're stretching just to deny the point.

and I think you put to much emphasis on the hometown stuff and the Ireland wouldn't want the job stuff.

I doubt we'll know who is right until Bill hires a GM though.

But you really have no idea how much emphasis I put on it. It was just a small bit of a larger post. You just chose that small bit to quibble with.

I didn't dismiss it at all. I think you might be confused.

But much of our previous discussion was on the final say rule -- and Jerry's quote would suggest that he isn't going to dispute the hire.

Anyway, I've got a game to watch and a gift bottle of Blantons to crack

Jerry's statement actually backs my position up. The fact that he thinks he can deny the move up until the draft shows that he thinks the rule is applicable. As to letting him go if he wants to go, regardless of the rule, after the draft, that's just being a good owner.

Ab, Unless Ireland is a mindless automaton then he is very much so going to care about having been born and raised in Dallas working for the same company as his father.

Jones can give him as much money as he wants and you are putting a whole ton of emphasis on a job title that has little to no meaning.

Parcells likes to micromanage and Ireland knows this and as much as Jerry likes being in the limelight, so does Parcells.

I just really dont see that much of a difference between working for Jones and Parcells in terms of what hes actually going to be doing. If you dont think Parcells is going to be heavily involved in personnel decisions then I have some oceanfront property in Kansas I want to sell you.

Really its going to come down to who and where Ireland wants to work. Nobody knows his feelings as he hasnt commented on them. Well know soon enough i imagine.

I don't know about that, but Jerry won the argument to select him w/ our original 4th, Bill wanted Canty there

People focus on the "final say" rule but everyone knows that is BS. There are very few GMs in the league who have the ultimate final, no questions asked, no discussion with someone above them, say unless they happen to own the team. The league isn't going to stand in the way of Bill getting Ireland. We all need to stop clinging to the semantics of the NFL hiring rules. If Bill wants Ireland and Ireland is going to get a better deal and more responsibility to go to Miami then he should get to go.

Let me ask this -- if any of you had an opportunity for a better job, better pay, and a real advancement for your career would you be happy if your current employer wouldn't let you go?
Sorry about the delay in responding, I just got back to my computer a few minutes ago. If Ireland wants to go and Jerry is willing, I have no problem with it. I was just making a sarcastic comment about the illusion that Parcells won't have final say.

I was an upper level manager for 35 years and during that time I helped develop and provide career ladders for a lot of top notch staff, even if their promotion took them elsewhere.

I disagree with your comment about semantics, but since I was just being tongue-in-cheek anyway it's not important.
