The only mistake became evident when our kickers had bad times. There was no sounding board for them.

That was what Hoffman did better than anyone else. I don't think the kickers he ended up finding every year were all that impressive. But he could diagnose if one of them was in a funk and try to correct the problem. And rest assured, he would NOT have recommended Jose Cortez.
