My mother saw me as a paradoxical optimist.
She noticed that when things were going swimmingly, I could become cautious and questioning. And when life got tough, I often seemed steely and calm.
I thought of her observation a few weeks ago when we sent out 580 letters to our newsroom staff, giving individuals a chance to leave the paper voluntarily; 111 accepted, and for most, their last day was Friday.
While some who left are familiar names to you, many practiced their craft expertly behind the scenes. They are all good people, experienced and caring professionals. We will miss them very much.
For example, sports columnist Kevin Blackistone chose to take the offer. His thoughtful and probing journalism almost always stimulated response from readers, and, in this hyper-busy world, that's saying something.
We'll miss Kevin's columns, but we are fortunate to welcome Jean-Jacques Taylor, our esteemed Dallas Cowboys writer who will take over Kevin's spot. You'll find Jacques' humor and keen reporting skills very appealing. Jacques really likes to break stories. He also has a new book out, Game of My Life: Memorable Stories of Cowboys Football.
