Blaming the HC, the DC, or even the QB is the real waste of time

Whenever I (or many other Cowboys fans) point out the central and fundamental flaw in the Dallas Cowboys and why they struggle year after year - thirty years now - to become a relevant team in the playoffs again, I often receive some fiery darts, lol. It’s fine, it’s an opinion forum.

So first let me say. - Yes, I know the following:
  • Some Cowboys fans think Dak Prescott is the biggest reason we suck. Despite the fact that he’s playing at a high level and that he and the kicker are the only things keeping us from being 0-6. Some folks on here are completely obsessed with Dak to the point of outright trolling silliness.
  • Some Cowboys fans think the head coach Brian Schottenheimer (the 7th HC we’ve had since our last divisional playoff win) is another big reason we suck. Too early for me to tell.
  • Many Cowboys fans believe our defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus (the 10th DC we’ve had since our last divisional playoff win) needs to be fired immediately so we can then hire the 4th DC we’ve had in 22 months. And we may have the least defensive talent in the NFL.
  • Some of our fans think we just need a trade or two for another weapon on offense or a pass rushing specialist on defense and we can somehow become…relevant? It’s a bad dream.
Here’s my point: Whatever you think about the QB, the HC, the DC or any other player or staff member associated with this team, or whatever magical trade you think this team needs, none of any of that is the deeper problem.

The reason we suck, the reason you hate the QB, the HC, the DC, the defense…whatever you are tired of. The REAL problem sits in the owner’s box. No trade, new HC, new QB, new Coordinators…whatever. Nothing will turn this around until the oldest GM in NFL history stops playing with his toy.

We have an owner/GM, and whatever combination of his family you want to include, that does not have a clue how to build an entire NFL organization - from top to bottom.

So feel free to dream of the perfect trade, the next QB we need, the next HC or DC…nothing will ultimately change until something changes at the top of our organization.
Like yourself and everyone else I have put up with a lot of nonsense over the years from our owner/ GM. Particular 'lowlights' off the top of my head:

1) Keeping JG far too long.
2) Giving up 2 1st round picks for Joey Galloway.
3) Trading a 1st round pick for Roy Williams
4) Wasting the team Bill Parcells built
5) Poor evaluation of roster talent
6) Over paying your own players
7) Not hiring the best coaches, more a case of 'can Jerry work with him'
8) Delaying signing 'star players' which results in less money for free agency
9) Trading your elite pass rusher for a poor return the week before the season, when any knowledgeable person would build a team around him.

Let me add (beats a new post) I've always found this forum kind of funny during the season.

Seems like we have a lot of people missing and taking their bi polar medication during the season.

We tie a team we thought we were going to get smoked by and look out baby, things are looking good. We lose to 2-3 team (where we're 2-2-1 and that tie coming on a 65 yard field goal just to tie that game at the end of the game with no pretty much no time left), and now it's season over, bunch of bums, fire people.

EVERY year this forum is like this. Good, bad, going to the super bowl baby and then fire everyone.

Who here didn't think there should have been some major changes with this organization when we got blown out in the playoffs by Green Bay?

I got to watch the cowboys game yesterday (few times I get to seem them play on TV) and I honestly thought they were going to win, but when you looked at the stats during the game, they were losing pretty much in every category and I was wondering if they won, how it would be spun on this forum.

The reality is given the new coaches, the new players and the soap opera with Parsons (self induced by this organization) we all knew we didn't have a great football team.

Being a Penn State Alum, Dak reminds me of James Franklin. Winning percentages are there, looks good most of the time, BUT when it comes down to winning the big games, no matter how good of a year Dak has we all know he could be a no show. You realize that PEnn State gave Franklin his 10 year contract when he was 7-6??? I thought PSU had lost it for giving that man so much money. I'm not anti Dak, but I thought the EXACT same thing when Dallas gave Dak his contract after the Green Bay playoff loss.

When you do the same crap year after year and think something is going to be different, what do you call that?
Maybe next year, when we do the same crap again, it will be different. lmao..........

The Jones family refuses to hire football people to run the franchise. They want to do it their way and refuse to admit they are the reason why the team has been bad for years. You are right, until Jerry retires expect similar results

And it’ll never change. I was at the ballgame sitting right behind the Cowboys’s bench. Watching Jerry and his entourage walk on to the field was a sight to see. The amont of kiss ***** that walked up to them was nauseating. They love every minute of it and with the stadium looking like it was majority Cowboys fans, they have no reason to change anything.

I will say that Jerry and company got out of there quick. I was disgusted and got a jump on leaving before they lined up for the last field goal to win the game. On the walk to the car the police escort was blaring and Jerry’s 3 suv luxury limousine motorcade was leaving the stadium. It was maybe 10-15 minutes after the game. LOL it was like the President of the United States was leaving.

Jerry and his family will never give up the attention and treatment this all brings them. We are doomed.
Did he have somewhere to go for his birthday?

I have seen Jerry close the locker room to the media a few times, and he was a raving lunatic. I have seen Jerry called into a local radio station defending his decisions before; I have seen Jerry get into a shouting match with Dale Hansen on live television.

He left yesterday because he was ashamed; he was ashamed of his poor decisions that were made building this roster especially on Defense. This roster on Defense is bad. He overpaid Bland and Diggs and filled in the rest of the roster with cheap talent that would not be starters on Penn State.

I absolutely hate to say it but Micah Parsons was the difference with D; no matter what Jerry says.

The Jones family has been saying for weeks that the defense was going to get better and it has not. Jones left because he was not ready to face the questions that he knew was coming. You can only have some many excuses for the Defense.

I believe that he is planning to make a major move this week to try to salvage the season.

I agree. Everything you said is pretty spot on.

In regards to seeing Jones leave yesterday. I was literally at the entrance to the VIP parking where they were pulling out and I saw Jerry Jones Jr. sitting in one of the limos and he did not look happy. They peeled out of there quick. It was maybe 15 minutes after the ballgame ended.

He was definitely ashamed yesterday and embarrassed. Rico called him and his defense out pretty much and was clutch.

This defense rarely put 8 in the box yesterday and played off zone coverage. Diggs and Bland were many times 10 yards off the ball and the only time I remember him sending a blitz was when we actually got our lone sack but I sure pray he sent more blitzes that I missed. Just a piss poor game plan. Forget about the lack of talent which is ridiculous in it's own right. Eber**** never changed anything. They knew they were going to feed Rico all day and he did absolutely nothing to change what wasn't working.

It was embarrassing and I hope Jerry felt it all.

The DC stinks. He deserves criticism.

In his time as DC and HC he has never put a great D on the field.

Correct. The owner and front office build incomplete teams. While they do a good job on offense they are terrible drafting defense and their choice of DC is very questionable.

Oh I think he knows how....... many successful models/franchises are out there on how to get it done. The problem is that building a championship team IS NOT his top priority at the point in his life. The gold jacket sealed that IMO.......I honestly believe now, Jerry just wanna stay relevant enough to retain the franchise's top financial value.

Just me and I have closely researched it, but it's weird how he seems to never WANT top head coach, offense and defense clicking on ALL CYCLINDERS during the same season.
Every time we are on the brink of a top offense, he sabotages the defense or offense by refusing to address a key position.

Top offense this season .......traded the best defensive player the team has had since DeMarcus Ware.
That's what doesn't make sense to me...building a championship caliber team may cost him maybe $50mm more a year in coaches and players, but the return would be 10 fold if he gets to NFCCG or super bowl.on a routine basis every 5-10 years.

I had an interesting thought earlier in the week about Jerry’s adolescent antics of flipping off fans last Sunday in NY behind his plexiglass booth.

It is a perfect representation of what he’s doing to all Cowboys fans who continue to pretend he’s not an embarrassment to this once proud organization and the Dallas community. People in the DFW area have pretty much had it with Jerry. If you don’t live here, you might not know it.
He should have been given a suspension from attending games for flipping off fans . 250,000 fine he laughed at.

That’s how you hurt him. Take him out of the game.

And locals recently named him the most hated sports personality in DFW area.

Fan apathy and rebellion is his greatest fear.

All I know is that Jerry is glad you guys are in here discussing how to make this team better, but he doesn't care.
He's going to do the same crap this year as last, as the one before, and the one before, and you guys are looking for different results. Insanity, I say...Insanity.....

Hey, get your gear before it hits the 3rd world market. Don't let the indians in the Amazon put you to shame with their cool gear...

in the meantime Eberfudge does need to go.

How much worse can it be than 32nd ranked.

Bob we ALL know that Jerry’s the root problem. The entire football world knows that. It’s been beat over the head for years now. But it’s insane to keep saying it over and over and over again hoping something changes. It isn’t.

Jerry the owner is worse than Jerry the GM. Jerry the owner created the circus atmosphere where strangers walk around the complex and players have an open door to go over the HC's head.

Sure, it's all on Jerry. We get it.

Every Cowboy year has its seasons. Spring is about the draft and hope. Summer is for bold declarations of greatness. The fall is about wondering what's wrong. The winter is about finger pointing and " I told you so".

Whats the conclusion of your post? If i follow your logic thru to the end it means that there is no more reason to discuss anything until JJ and SJ leave.

So just shut down the forum until then?

We all know that already what you posted. But people dont share their opinions only because they hope that something will change. They do it for alot of reasons.

Get up your hope again Bob! Its ok to be down after what we have seen this season. Still dont let yourself be influenced by that too much.

I also have to admit that Dak this year is not the sole reason we are so bad. This is a bad roster. As i already said before the season to me its the worst roster we had after the SB winning years. And its the worst roster of any NFL team for at least the last decade.

But that doesnt change the fact that Dak is a major problem. He aint the sole reason this year but nevertheless he is a very big reason we havent been successfull since he took over. And that has to be adressed. Of course everything else also.

Spot on. Jerry is a master salesman. He has created this back and forth every year for as long as I remember. He's fooled fans into debated that it's coaches' fault or the QB's fault. Fans go back and forth hating/loving the coach and/or QB. Meanwhile, he goes free of all blame. It's only been the last few years that people have started dogpiling on good ole Jerry. However, right after the media dogpiles on Jerry, the Cowboys will win a game or two and then the media will fall back in love with all the Jerry sound bites because they know fans will tune in. Rinse/repeat.

I used to stream The Fan at work all day long for a number of years. I stopped doing that last year and haven't listened since. At some point, if you want it to stop, you have it hit Jerry's ego. Stop listening to him but can all of Cowboy nation do that? Nope, way too many homers for that to ever happen so here we are and when (IF) Jerry passes, we won't have much hope because I feel Stephen may even be worse. Jerry knows a little about football, but Stephen just thinks he knows and that's dangerous.

Jerry is the fundamental problem with this organization. There is no balance of authority. There is no HC alive that will win big in Dallas. The HC must have control of the roster. The GM with coaching staff input has control of roster additions. Ownership approves budgets. Seperation of authority is healthy because keeps people accountable. Every great organization demonstrates these principles. Dallas does not.
