I think the current CB play is not the problem with the defense.
No scheme works when you're missing your starting DE's and two starting LB's.
Simply put NO was 6-13 on third downs and converted several third and longs, that cant happen. Also another game with no turn overs forced. Just like 28 points should have beaten Atlanta, 20 should have beat NO.
Stupid expectations? lol. Weeden is going to hurt this team worse than injury or any other issue moving forward. I don't think it's a lot to expect a QB to to be able to do what I said. As you are calling out the all the great things he did, please keep in mind that it was Defense that a lot of rookies playing. We play a D like the Broncos and Weeden leaves in a body bag because he can't step up or slide in the pocket. It's like watching Drew Bledsoe all over again in his final half before Romo took over. But never mind me, let's just send Weeden to the HoF because he basically played a college level D.
Send him to HOF, nah. He's a backup, remember. Anytime you want him to execute EVERYTHING right, every play. Remember, he's a backup that you HOPE doesn't see the field the entire season.
Charles Haley on the Cowboys' defense: "dumber than a box of rocks. They don't listen, and that's why we're losing."
One of the things I continue to wonder about is the fact that everywhere the Lovie Smith / Marinelli scheme has worked, it has had very good to great zone CBs.
Neither Claiborne or Carr fit that mold.
I think it's a problem.
IMHO, Marinelli is much better DL coach that defensive coordinator.
We don't play Tampa 2, we play mostly man
Actually, we play a lot of Cover 3 with man-to-man concepts.
Carr is average at best, but we pay him to be great.
Claiborne has looked really good this year. Patmon has played well. White is solid and Jones has been solid.
The issue to me is more with Church. Today's game has changed from the heyday of Lovie Smith with the Bears. Grantland did a big article on it last year...the safety position is becoming more important in order to stop today's offenses which feature big TE's, big WR's and then the WR's that run those pivot routes like Beasley does. You're getting more hybrid TE's/hybrid RB's, so you need those safeties that can handle it. The pass patterns are more 'flared' out and screen oriented.
It's obvious that Wilcox has to spell it out for him and if the opposing offense hurries things up, he can't figure it out and he doesn't have the speed to recover. We could move Jones to FS and Wilcox to SS, but our backups are Heath, McCray and Church.
Combine that with a lack of a pass rush and Sean Lee going down every other series...not good.

And Church can't even tackle. That used to be a great strength of his. Now he's just a liability.
Sadly, he's better than Heath.

By the 4th quarter of the game our WR corp consisted of Terrence Williams, Cole Beasley and Devin Street. That's all we had at WR due to injury. That's why it's puzzling when people blame Weeden who had a 109 QB rating at 9.5 ypa with no turnovers.
The game winning TD came after Gachkar got injured on a blatantly illegal pick and there was a rush to put the right player in and to get him out (he should have just layed down and call for an injury timeout). We were disorganized which is going to happen when you have this many injuries and the Saints snapped the ball quickly. Had the refs actually called a penalty for the illegal pick, it stops the play and it's now 1st and 20. How people don't see that missed pick call as relevant is just sorry.
The big story of Garrett's tenure is that he fields injury prone teams. Only last season did we not have a massive amount of injuries and even still, we had a ton on defense...just our offense stayed healthy. This year we've lost time from the following players that are either starters or backups in name only because they contribute so much:
Ronald Leary
Tony Romo
Dez Bryant
Lance Dunbar
Terrell McClain
Randy Gregory
Jeremy Mincey
Sean Lee
Orlando Scandrick
That's NINE key contributors/starters before week 5. And it doesn't include Ro. McClain and Greg Hardy.
It's gotten to the point where I literally look for an injured player after almost every single play.

Sadly, he's better than Heath.
