as often as they call "illegal contract" against defenses, I don't know why they don't call these pick plays against offense more often... if it's against the rules, it's against the rules.

Because pick plays lead to points, and big offense is what makes sports successful to Joe Casual.

If the NFL could find a way to be a successful organization without defense at all, they would do it.

It's an illegal play, the NFL should fine players and teams for using them.
Yeah... And they pay a fine.... Big Deal.

For something like this sweeping reforms.
Where this and other type of team related plays that are illegal and repeated multiple times.
Get more like into Draft picks.

I know. Then you watch how the Saints got away with mugging our receivers all night and we got flagged for barely touching their wideouts (Wilcox penalty comes to mind). After watching the horrible officiating in the Steelers Cardinals game (which shifted all the momentum to the Steelers) I am now more convinced than ever that the NFL has an agenda and is dirty at it's core.

I need to find other forms of entertainment on Sunday afternoons. Dean Blandino is bad for my system.

Wasn't there a play where Weeden got hit in the helmet by a blitzer too (player reached out and hit him)? The ref looked right at it and shook his head.

Keep multiplying the fine for each offence.

  1. Player fine: $5k Team fine: $50k
  2. Player fine: $10k Team fine: $100k
  3. Player fine: $20k Time fine: $200k
  4. etc
The biggest problem will be proving it was a designed pick play rather than an accident.

It's designed into the Pat's offense.

btw, this is an easy fix. 15 yards and loss of down.
effectively ends 90% of drives where it occurs and teams will stop that crap.

The NFL could solve the issue if they wanted to do it. The issue is that the NFL loves offense.

It would be funny if some bad team just started running pick plays so blatantly and excessively that the NFL had to do something about it.

To be perfectly honest - I did not know that. I thought you could have any kind of contact in the first five.

That really surprised me.

Here is a pretty good article on it. I'm not sure if ruled have changed more in the last couple years.

There are two very important points to keep in mind when talking about legal versus illegal picks: within one yard of the line of scrimmage, anything goes—you can block the defender as much as you want and it doesn’t matter if the ball is in the air or not; but beyond that one-yard buffer it is illegal for an offensive player to initiate contact with a defender.

When one reads through it, the subjectivity in relation to the offense and rubs in particular, at least to me, possibly allow refs to dictate outcomes way too much.

Teams that can handle the teams that pick a lot, are those that are great in man coverage and can play aggressively at the line. Corners in particular have to win the battle right at the beginning of the snap.

Too much is catered to he offense...

Here is a great interview with Wade Phillips the year he took off coaching. He mentions how referees aren't calling a lot of the illegal plays by offenses.

http://thebiglead.com/2014/11/12/a-long-conversation-with-wade-phillips/

His discussion on defending what the WRs are doing and teams are doing be design starts with this question:

As you’ve no doubt seen, they’ve been calling a lot of illegal contact this year. Most of the rule changes in the past decade or so have negatively impacted defense. We’re seeing quarterbacks put up insane numbers. How did this affect your coaching?

WP: Well, we got the force-out rule turned in our favor. But, you’re right about all the other ones. It’s been that way for awhile. They’re calling it more and more, but it’s been going that way. Five-yard contact. You just figure out how they’re going to call it and you teach your players. Those are tremendously tough penalties when you give them a first down every time. It’s just something you work on, but it certainly makes it tough on the defense.

Nice observation. Anytime the O player hits/brushes the D player that should be called. At least that would be a start to some regularity in the calling of penalties
