I never saw an issue with the old rule about what was a catch. Who decided that the "two feet down and possession" rule should be changed? And why did they change it? Sure it was a judgement call, but so is the current rule. Even more so IMO.

That is it. It shouldn't matter after 2 feet down anywhere on the field, sideline or endzone.

Then the regular fumble, down by contact and breaking the plane rules apply.

CJohnson- TD as soon as second foot or knee hits
Dez- catch, down by contact on the one
Tate- TD as soon as second foot hits and he still has the ball since he already broke the plane
Eifert- TD as soon as it broke the plane
Maclin- catch, would have been down by contact if inbounds
Butch Johnson SB XII- TD as soon as elbow/shoulder hit as ball was across the plane. If in the field of play it would be a catch and a fumble since he wasn't down by contact.

@cowboyjoe it's nice to see you around here buddy. We miss you! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the season.

I'm not sure why you're not around much anymore, but I hope you're doing well buddy.

thanks buddy, its real simple about blandino: he knows he made a mistake, so he makes the new dez catch rule to cover himself up,

reason why detriot got the call overturned,
1. bandino was in headquarters, he overturned the call
2. why he did that was simple, mrs ford owner of the lions made a statement to where she was very angry at the bad calls a few weeks ago, she let her voice be known
3. the owners are the ones that basically tells the nfl management what they can do or not to a large degree. so if you want anything changed about the refs, dont fuss at the refs, or head coaches, or goodell, but go to the owners, make yourself heard, let them get in the face of blandino and goodell
4. the owners have to do this behind closed doors, dont make a public statement to the media, but go directly to goodell and blandino, make your displeasure known
5. blandino made it known he fired refs this year for not doing their job, but who does blandino answer to, the owners basically, true goodell but way to get to goodell, the owners
6. blandino and his refs have made how many bad calls the past 3 weeks, how many refs were documented that didnt know the nfl rues? the seattle blunder this year and the time clock issue.
7. Blandino is in charge of these refs, why isnt he being fired or demoted
8. also blandino didnt have the proper equipment ready for equipment staff to gauge footballs before preseason started, why didnt blandino take heat, because goodell covers up bad management in the nfl
9. so go to the owners all fans, complain, let your voice be heard. blandino has made way to many mistakes this year

I'm not sure they significantly altered the rule this off season. Instead of defining the technical term Football move, they moved to another technical term runner. The problem is who ever they have writing the rule set right now doesn't seem to understand that inside a rule set like this common words can have secondary definitions inside that rule set. What does becoming a runner mean? I don't think anyone knows because its not really defined in the rule book anywhere. Its the exact same problem as football move, there was never a definition of what that term meant in the context of the rule.

To some extent it feels like they made the rule less specific in the off season, which I think actually serves the NFL home offices purposes.

He's saying you'll find information that supports your preconceived notions. If you begin from a premise, you'll find information that supports it and ignore that which does not.

Confirmation bias 101.

Thanks. I think that's what is happening with regards to this "Blandino was trying to make up for the Lions call" nonsense.

It is an act that is not related to the catch process of two feet down and control...so anything else a player does finishes the act of receiving...or in the Dez play that would have been the turn, the step, the switching the ball to one hand, the brace with the right arm, the push off with the left leg, and the reach with the left arm.

There is simply no way whatsoever to make this rule which will satisfy everyone all the time. The very nature of sports creates a situation where you are always going to have biases come into play. Every single close call will result in one team feeling they were screwed.

It is a problem that is impossible to solve and will exist so long as the forward pass is legal.

like this? on this level? yeh um it was much easier back in the 90s n 80s.
Ok, now ask yourself why that is the case. Is it because the officiating was better? Or is it maybe - just maybe - because these days every play is shot from 4 angles in super slo-mo hi-definition and then every idiot with an opinion goes straight to the Internet to whine and complain about how unfair the call was, and there are countless hours of all-NFL, all the time talk filling our cable TV's and satellite radios, whereas back in the 80's, most people literally had nothing more than the 30-minute Sunday morning pre-game show?

By the way, Blandino took over 3 years ago, not in the 80's or 90's. So the fact that you have to go back 3 decades kinda proves the point I was making.
