ok so the past 2 years we were in a very basic version of the 3-4. never really blitzed except the obvious(ware and/or ellis) but when we brought more guys on a blitz it looked like the defense was never taught how to blitz in there entire lives. you know we just never got through the o-line. so my question is: Do you think wade philips can make us good blitzers in a short amount of time to make his version of the 3-4 effective here in big D?

The biggets positive about Wade Phillips' history is that every defense he's taken over had IMMEDIATE improvement in his first season coaching them.

As per his bio on DC.com:
When the Chargers won the AFC West and qualified for the playoffs in 2004 on the heels of a 4-12 season in 2003, Phillips kept his streak intact of helping to turn teams with non-winning records into playoff participants the following year.

Blitzing is all about player position and timing IMO... Philadelphia and San Diego are 2 teams that have it down to an artform.

I think this defense will look tremendously different from last seasons. I have no doubt that when we blitz, we won't look like blundering idiots running into the line of scrimmage and getting stoned without any effort from the OLine.

If you watch a Chargers game from this past season.. its similar to watching the Eagles defense. The blitzes are delayed, players fake blitzes to draw OLinemen to them, and they overload gaps right before the ball is snapped. 3 things that we rarely (if ever) did over the past couple of years.

Yes, most defiently. The players are already familar with the basic 34 formations (we have run basic for 2 yrs now...amazing).

The task now is to teach positioning, leverage, timing, and the other little things that make the phillups 34 unique. It does not take very long to do this, in fact Phillups is known for turning teams around rather quickly.

im glad you guys think so. but 1 thing i noticed is both you guys mentioned the history of wade taking over a team and turning the D around. but that makes me think of the history of success parcells had in his 1st 4 years with a team up until he came to dallas

He could have been hired at mid-season last year and make a impact the next week.

His 3-4 is completely different than the one we ran last year. Parcells likes the two-gap scheme which is read and react. Basically, engage the offensive player and then read which gap to go to. Phillips like a one gap front. You are assigned a gap and hit that gap with speed and force the lineman to block you. A much better scheme in my opinion.

There's 1 big difference in the 2 situations.

Bill Belichik.

As far as I know, Wade Phillips didn't have a football genius following him from team to team to help him with his gameplan like Bill Parcells had with Bill Belichik. Wade Phillips IS the "genius" to develop the gameplan. Bill Belichik missing from Parcell's Cowboys stop and the gameplan seemed to be among the most frustrating things during Parcell's tenure.

Too bad we didn't hire him following the 2nd Giants game (the week of the Saints game). :laugh1:

The 3-4 we have been playing is basically a straight up scheme. The OL just has to wall off the 3 DL and noone else can get through because there are no gaps. In order to get to the QB you have to go around the line and that takes time. When LBs and safetys come up the middle they just get tangled up in all the mess. Phillip's 3-4 uses DL slants and stunts designed to open holes in the OL just as LBs and Safties shoot those gaps with delayed blitzes. Its yet to be seen but I'm hoping we will see improved blitzing next year.

I think at the very least, Wade Phillips will liven up this lethargic defense. Is this a great off-season, or what?

Not sure about the blitzing, but you guys wait and see the difference in Canty and Spears with this system.

Wow, that's one heck of endorsement TEK.

There's a reason for the quotation marks..lol. I didn't mean he is a genius.. I was just trying to clarify that he was the man with the good gameplan (defensively) and not depending on others to come up with it.

Parcells had Belichick. Belichick had Romeo Crennell & Charlie Weiss.
