Since Spears, Witten nor Campbell seem to be able to get it done as a blocking back on short yardage, ... what are the pros and cons of Roy being the blocking back, just on short yardage or goal line.

He would be sure to blow someone up !

Too small to be a FB. He'd get crushed by a defensive linemen, even a linebacker. I wouldn't want Roy head up against Urlacher, Lewis, etc.

Injury would be my first con and the fact that he's never done it before.

:hammer:

Roy doesnt even like to play disciplined defense, much less have a blocking assignment.....he likes to be free in the secondary to kind of do his own thing, he plays good zone, too, but he'd rather have a free for all back there.......it'd be too much to try and teach him blocking assigments this late in the season.......may be something to try in the offseason though......

I'd say that blocking in that situation would be a dangerous situation for him. It is not like making a big hit in the open field where he normally gets them. He would be blocking Defensive Linemen not tackling WR's and RB's and they would have a considerable weight and size advantage. As hard as Roy hits it might backlash and blow himself up with him hitting a guy coming out of a stance and outweighing him by 75 lbs.

I'd rather have the 290 lb man blocking the 250 lb man then the 230 lb man blocking the same guy.

Spears gets plenty of rest on defense with the line rotation anyway. Roy never comes out of the game on defense. Don't want to use him more then that.

Just bring back Jammer...

Exactly, a guy who can't hold down an NFL job is the answer to all of our problems.

Why didn't BP or any other team think of this!

Brilliant analysis.

Good question abersonc, about BP.

Just saw an a ESPN special on Lorenzo Neal (SP?). He's blocked for a few featured RB's in the league...Currently San Diego and LT.

Check out what Emmitt has to say about Moose.

FB does seem to be a forgotten position in the NFL these days. Personally I'm surprised that BP doesn't like the big bruising FB who clears a path for the RB...Especially since he loves to run the ball so much.

I hear your sarcasm of me, talking about Jammer from a mile away. Lets see

"Why didn't BP or any other team think of this! Brilliant analysis."

But, this thread was started on the question about blocking backs, so instead of giving your position on the matter, you instead, just decided to poke fun at my analysis.

So now I ask you, do you have a position on the matter sir ? Do you not like FB's ? Is it just Jammer you have a problem with ? If so, why, based upon your own insight and not based on the fact that he is not here.

You see, I think BP is a great coach and football mind. Although from time to time I, like some others, question things he does.

One of mine has been why haven't we had a true FB since he has arrived ? Richie Anderson on down have all been kept for other reasons besides their blocking skills. I know that BP like more diverse FB's that can do more than just block, I just don't know why he likes them better...Because I don't.

Jammer was drafted because he was a blocking machine, cut because he was a blocking machine.

Now we use Campbell, Witten, Polite, Spears and Pryce (Before he got hurt) as lead blockers. Our running game basically sucks. I think it would be better with Jammer as the lead blocker.

Read Vela's last article about this. I respect his musing so far this year and he seems to share the same philosophy on the lead blocker trend.

In closing abersonc, I hope you have a better response than "Why didn't BP or any other team think of this!"

edit:...One last thing abersonc....Just noticed...

Happy Birthday !

I think my point was that Jamar sucks. What did he do well -- every so often he would totally blow up an LB. But he missed. A lot. He can't catch the ball -- Neal's no great pass catcher but he gives you about 15 a year. Moose could catch too.

I love the FB position -- but you need a good FB.

Lots of folks love Jamar -- they assume he was a good player since we took him in the 4th round. He made a few highlight reel blocks. What he didn't do was perform consistently.

So in conclusion, Jamar Martin is not an NFL quality FB. He's not on the active roster of ANY team currently -- that says something about how NFL talent evaluators view him.

The kid at Oklahoma, Runnels I think is his name, would be ideal for our FB. He can block really well, and he can also catch and run the ball. (My $.02).

Having played the game before as a lot of you prob. have also. I think Jamar Martin was a stud and I would have kept him. Time would have allowed him to be a more consistent blocker and rec. JMHO

And he plays special teams too. I'd rather not kill our starting SS just to see if he can be a blocking back in GL situations....

But do you really think your evaluation of Jamar as a stud trumps the evaluations of all 32 NFL teams, none who see him as good enough to warrant a spot on an NFL active roster?

I mean we are 12 weeks into the season here. Tons of players have gone on IR. Tons of guys have been cut. Still, no Jamar.

To me, it looks like no one in the league thinks he's worth a roster spot. And that is not consistent with being a "stud"

Jamar is just another example of BP evaluating someone correctly.

I've always wanted to see Larry Allen at FB in a "Jumbo" formation hitting a LB or Safety with a full head of steam.

Yeah, I like violence.
