Blueprint for how Cowboys should draft QB already in place

Never really thought about it like this until just heard it on Rysillo (SP) and Kennell on ESPN radio. The blueprint for what we need to do at QB is already in place and coming to it's fruition right now - in Denver.

Bronco's took Brock Oswiler with a 2nd round pick in 2012. He has sat behind Manning now for three years. Knows their system inside out. Has practiced for 3 years and been coached up, so they know what they have, now that Manning looks like the end is near, they need to see Oswiler on the field to determine if he is in fact their replacement. They speculated that even tho Manning is hurt, they waited till he broke Favre's record and planned to pull him anyway. (Ala, what we would do with ROMO).
THAT, my friends should be exactly our blue print !
We keep Cassel as our primary backup - at least for 1 more year and we identify a 2nd round QB to draft this year. He gets to sit/practice and learn the system - properly, with no pressure of starting. We evaluate him after year 1 to see if he can step up to the main backup behind Romo, thus releasing Cassel. He still sits until Romo is done, and we have our man in the fold.
Unless they evaluate a 1st round/franchise QB this year, this should be our game plan.
Thus also leaving our top pick for an impact player now .....

Not really anything new. Same with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Although I'm not sure the even the Broncos know that Osweiller is the future in Denver.

If they are one of the teams doing their homework on Lynch, doesnt sound like they are sold.

ideally that would be a great idea, but most QBs worth anything these days are long gone by pick 15 of round 1. Heck, many QBs that AREN'T worth anything are also gone by then. If you get a chance to pick up a good QB with a chance to be special in ANY ROUND, you should run to the podium and get him. The position is the so important, you can't win without one.

Exactly. Don't force it, but the top tier is Goff and Lynch. If those two are there, take them. The need is not immediate, but it is close enough to address it now if one falls into your lap.

This is the same argument some of us have been making for the past several drafts. Then the retort is that you are developing a QB for someone else because Romo will play a million gazillion years and the player would never get to see the field.

The time is pretty much now. And so what if you have a rookie backup? It is not like any veteran you can get in this QB starved league is going to win you football games, especially in this offensive system.

Ramsey and Goff are there at #6. Who do you take?

I dunno if we can pass on a guy like Goff and pin our hopes on Hackenberg or Wentz in round two. If we go that route, I'd almost rather roll the dice on Sudfield or Hogan a little later on.

Lol at freaking Brock Oswiler as the blue print. He was available in the late 2nd and has been "developing" on the bench because he's not that good.

Then there's Aaron Rodgers as an example....and who else? Draft a guy in the top 10, play him early and let him develop on the field. That's the real NFL blue print and it's really not even debatable

I take goff. A safety would be nice but this season has been ruined because we did not have an adequate backup qb. The qb is not the only problem why we are not winning but it is the biggest. Anyone see the record for our backup qb's when they have to start? Any one should say we need a quality backup and someone to groom. Romo is not getting younger and quite frequently missed games the last couple years. Draft a qb

I think I agree with you, but if the defense plays just a little better, we walk out of a few fourth quarters with the leads we walked into them with. Ramsey is a difference-making talent.

I think we'll be picking somewhere between 4-7 and one of the top 2 guys should still be there.

You can't tell about a QB without investing significant reps in him, no matter where you get him or how long you sit him. Either you get lucky when you force feed him the reps because you're desperate, or you get lucky when you dribble reps to him over the course of 3 or 4 years. There are skills and NFL QB has to have to be successful that can't be learned anywhere other than playing against NFL defenses. There really isn't a magic bullet.

If you're lucky, you get one of the 4-5 adequate QBs with experience to back up your starter. If not, you're rolling the dice like everybody else is.

That said, I liked Osweiler as a sit-and-develop prospect. He's got a shot in Denver, and he's had about as fortunate a situation there for a young QB as you can hope to hope for. 3 years to develop on a team with offensive weapons and a good defense. And the best player, maybe ever, at your position to learn under in a QB friendly offense. We'll see how he does.

Who would be higher on the Cowboys board? That's who I take.

Like for example, if we are there at say 6 and the big DT from Ole Miss is there and he's #3 on our board and Goff is there and he's #10 on our board, I'd hope the Cowboys would take Nkemdiche.
