Here is his conclusion, with the full article below with a lot of graphs
**************
We can justify things to ourselves if we try, but the truth is that this current front office is not hitting the target often enough. I am guilty of feeling like they have improved, but we are going to need to see some more objective results before we congratulate anyone for getting this right.

The current report card does not suggest that the Cowboys are gaining ground on the powers. I know we often suggest that Jerry has a huge say on the first pick or two and then trusts his staff to fill out the draft card. That may or may not be true, but from Rounds 2-7 since 2009, the Cowboys are lagging well behind league average -- let alone the powers of the NFL draft game.

Let's hope the 2016 draft is better.

Over the past 5 drafts the Cowboys have used picks 34, 34, 40, 47, and 60 in the 2nd round.

For a variety of reasons, they won't get a single snap from any of those picks for the first 4 weeks of the 2016 season.

Much truth, but on the flip side.....

Dallas has built the best offensive line in football, with a solid receiving corps, and now a potential superstar running back. Don't forget perhaps the best kicker in football.

Defensively, if Cheech and Chong put down the bong, and Jaylon Smith heals, there is much to be optimistic about moving forward.

There is no flip side. The drafting has been terrible post the 1st round. You can't keep your team in talent if you can't draft beyond the first round. The only other way to replace that talent is free agency and that will crush your team.

I think his analysis of 1st rounders is a bit incomplete. We've actually had great success with first rounders from 2009-2015 (assuming Byron works out). We had one major bust (Claiborne), and we didn't have a first round pick in '09 which skews the data. Probably best to look at first round picks from 2010-2015 due to that since Dez, Tyron, Fred and Martin has performed well as they have earned 9 Pro Bowls between them.

To me, the bigger issue is the 2nd round picks. We've offset our issues in rounds 3-7 with great UDFA pickups, but the 2nd round picks need to be high quality starters and Pro Bowlers and we've struggled miserably from there.

This is nothing everyone didn't already know.

At the end of the day, it's not going to change. All we can do is hope. Jerry/Stephen are going no where. And we all know if they did not own the Cowboys, neither would have a job in an NFL front office.

If the folks in charge, have no clue what they are doing, they will in turn hire folks who have no clue on what they are doing, who in turn will hire folks who have no clue on what they are doing.

Post first-rounders in recent years:

Sean Lee
Anthony Hitchens
Dwayne Harris
Terrance Williams
Cole Beasley
Ron Leary
La'el Collins
Doug Free
Demarco Murray
Tyrone Crawford
Barry Church
JJ Wilcox
Dan Bailey
Demarcus Lawrence
Randy Gregory
James Hanna
Kyle Wilber
Bruce Carter
Orlando Scandrick

The problem was that the offensive line was ignored for far too long. Now the pass rush is the issue, and suspensions have derailed the process there.

It has not been terrible but it has not been good enough to push the Cowboys over the top talent-wise.

I was hoping, given the talent available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, Dallas would find three day-one starters in this draft. As of today, I would only consider Elliott one of those. Oh well, if Tony can stay healthy they still have a shot at the playoffs.

Pretty tough to argue with the point. The best teams draft well in the later rounds. It's tough to gain on them if you don't, too. The big hits early and the success in UDFA help, but we have to be better late in drafts as well. I think everybody gets that.

"That entire line of discussion is amusing to anyone who follows the Cowboys because we know that Tom Ciskowski and Will McClay are definitely in the room, but when it comes time to buy the groceries, they seem to get about the 5th heaviest vote behind Jerry, Stephen, Garrett, and whichever assistant coach is arguing the loudest (Somehow Rod Marinelli and Scott Linehan seem to be able to outrank McClay in the room at times, which is not something I would say is great news)."
