Draft Re-Cap Round 1-7

Round 1: Bobby Carpenter (OLB - Ohio State)
With the 18th pick in the draft a lot of people saw Bobby Carpenter as a reach pick, especially with Manny Lawson on the board (who later fell to the 22nd pick - 49ers) but really Bobby Carpenter is the most promising Linebacker in this draft, behind former teamate AJ Hawk. He is a versatile player and can play both OLB positions and even line-up as an ILB, not to mention the fact that in his college career he even lined up in a 3 point stance on occasion. With all that said, could Bobby Carpenter be the most well rounded Linebacker in this draft? IMHO, yes, he could just be the Linebacker that can do it all. If you look back at his college career, he made plays all over the field: From 8.5 sacks - and chasing down Vince Young, to Picking off 3 passes (including a Donovan Woods pass), to recording 13 stops behind the line. Yes, you might say that having AJ Hawk opposite of him and Anthony Schlegel inbetween the two made his job a lot easier, but couldnt you say the same for the other two? Bobby Carpenter is the only one of the two that placed 2nd (or higher) on the team in multiple categories and proved to be the best coverage linebacker of the three as he recorded 3 interceptions. not only was he great in coverage but he also occasionally lined up as an end and added 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles behind the line, proving that he is a terror to the Running Game as well. With Carpenters versatility, high motor and well rounded ability, do you really think he was a reach at the 18th spot?

Round 2:Anthony Fasano (TE - Notre Dame)

the idea of the 2 TE formation improves us in all aspects including Oline and WR which were 2, you could say "needs," and on top of that at the FB and TE spot as well. Fasano improves this offense a ton as the 2TE sets will be able to act as a 7 man Oline and Witten and Fasano will have to be accounted for in coverage as well. teams wont be able to blitz without leaving somebody open/single coverage.

I was pissed when i heard about us drafting a TE in round 2 and then when jerruh came on i was ecstatic, i was just amazed at the amount that Fasano will be able to change in our offense and he is another weapon for defenses to account for instead of slow ryan hannam.

i hope this clears up the reason for the fasano signing :D.

So, Fasano brings a lot more to the table than one thinks. the guy had a great career at Notre Dame. His sophmore year he was the leading WR against USC. Junior year came around and he had 9 starts and came in second on the team with 376 yards and 4 TDs. Senior Year: 564 yards with 2 TDs. (Just a few stats from college)

The guy was also a solid Special Teamer throughout his college career and he proved to be worthy of the John Mackey (TE) award. what he brings to the table changed my opinion on what he could do for our team, the guy is a solid special teamer, a great TE who will pose a threat all over the field and will have to be accounted for.

some people ask why Fasano > Pope? i think Fasano because he helps fill the role of FB and blocking TE more than Pope is capable of doing, and we need a blocking TE who can still catch passes. Fasano just like Carpenter is well rounded and Pope just like Lawson is more talented is certain aspects. and that is a big reason why we passed on both Pope and Lawson.

Round 3: Jason Hatcher (DE - Grambling State)
My FAVORITE pick of the draft! you say im crazy and ask me "why?" and heres my reasoning. the guy is a true athlete who is always willing to work hard and get better. he was the only BPA pick that we made all day, with the acception of Pat Watkins falling to us in round 5 as a BPA/Need. The guy adds solid depth to our Dline and has a huge upside, he is going to be utalized in the Defensive rotation and will hopefully challenge Spears for a starting spot before seasons end. for all you people who HATE this pick, i can understand why. i mean we have Ellis, Spears, Canty, Ratliff, Coleman and you'd think taht 5 Defensive Ends is quite enough and a 3rd round pick should not be spent on a position we have filled. but now with Hatcher a DE of the future who will make an impact on the roster/rotation and be a nice relief for both Spears and Ellis we have no worries for DE for years to come. on most top 100 boards he was rated the 88th best player and we got him with the 92nd pick of the draft, so this guy was a steal if you ask me!

Round 4: Skyler Green (WR - LSU)
Yes, a return man. this is something that we have lacked since "Prime time". Skyler Green is a small, quick and hard to cover WR that will definately put up a strong fight for the #3 WR spot. Crayton, although i really respect and like the way the guy plays is going to have a hard time being the #3 WR and finding his way onto the starting lineup for all 16 games this coming season. Back to Skyler - like i said "quick, small and hard to cover" this doesnt only apply to him as a receiver, the guy will be a solid return man and set us up with good field position. on top of that he will be able to make a return out of something that is not there, Ireland says that he reminds him of Dante Hall, which is quite a strong comparison, seeing as Hall is the best return specialist in the NFL. He is in no way a "steal" but definately a solid pick in the 4th round.

Round 5:pat Watkins (FS - Florida State)
This might be the best pick of our draft, a steal in the 5th round and a freakishly figured and talented athlete. the guy is 6'5" (very tall for a S) and is known for his freakish 42" vertical leap. He is a ball hawk and will free up Strong Safety Roy Williams. I Hope to see him in the line-up before the mid-point of the season. Covering smaller, quicker WRs is a tough task for him, but he is fairly quick for his freakish size and will be asked mainly to play a deep zone. expect this guy to make big plays for us all over the field.

Round 6: Montavious Stanley (NT - Louisville)
Huge guy, i havent seen all to much of him but he is a big boy who will provide for a solid ratatory guy in place of ferguson. he will definately get quite a few reps in this season and see himself in the rotation for the Dline. ive heard that he is quick off the ball, strong and can take on two blockers in order to free up linebackers. as a 6th round pick dont expect anything special out of this guy. he was a great pickup in round 6 and has a huge upside.

Round 7: Pat McQuistan (OT - Weber State)
Small chance of making the final roster cut, he is camp fodder and has a bigger name because of his brother. he is big and strong but as a 7th round pick shouldnt be expected to be all to much.

Round 7: E.J. Whitley (OT - Texas Tech)
This guy is listed as a OT in some places and a OG in others. he actually has a pretty good chance of making the final roster cut just because of the fact that he is versatile since he can play any spot along the Offensive Line. he will be around as a 2nd or 3rd string player at all positions and spend most of his first few years on the bench.

Conclusion:
No player was a sexy pick, yet no player was a "reach". all the guys we chose were solid players and Pat Watkins followed by Jason Hatcher probably have the biggest upsides and were the best picks our team had. Bobby Carpenter is a solid and versatile LB that can cover and wreak havoc all over the field from various positions. Fasano is a solid TE who has to be accounted for and will be seen on special teams. Montavious Stanley is a big boy who will rotate in quite a bit with Ferguson, Johnson and Ratliff, yes i said Ratliff. the two 7th rounders are hard to evaluate, but Whitley is versatile and will most likely be on the roster for just that reason.

Not a bad amateur write up BB. Clean it up and it's pretty good. Nice job.

I agree with what he said about Hatcher.
I mean think about it....Hatcher is a tiny bit smaller in height and a tenth of a second slower than the #1 overall pick Mario Williams.
What's the problem with Hatcher in the third?
We were not going to get this guy in the fourth round when every team gets to go back and review the prospects on Saturday night and then we have to wait until the middle of the fourth to make a pick.
The very fact that New England as wanting him should tell you that Hatcher is a great pick.
I don't mind us taking a player a round early if he has the measurables and character of a 1st round pick. Hatcher has that.
Hatcher and Stanley gives us the finishing touch on our 3-4 d-line.
Carpenter,Ayondele and Boiman does that for our lb's.
Watkins sounds like he could do that for our secondary....please no more big plays late in games!
I really think that with the addition of Fabini,Kosier and a healthy Columbo our offense may have turned the corner.
We have depth...some guys have question marks but that have skill if they are healthy.
Guys like Columbo,Peterman,Beriault and Thornton can make plays for this team.

Brew man that was good. Hatcher reportedly had three teams targeted him in the 4th including New Orleans a few picks later.

That's a good write up. I agree on Hatcher...for those of you who don't like the pick, just look at how freakish the guy is. You win games in the trencehes, and our DL is very good now.

Watkins was our best pick, IMO. Some had him slated as early as the 2nd round. If Watkins can get out on the field, which I think he will, it helps our team from ST to the defense. He's rangy (go watch teh film). Not the quickest guy, but he gets to teh ball very well.
