He pressured Manning on one play, blew up the play in the backfield on the play right before Roy Williams intercepted, and then ran down a running back from behind. He's coming along...

I'd like to see him develop even more tomorrow.

You're wrong!

He's a bust.

The many "NFL personnel experts" on this board told us so. :)

He's big, fast, and has a good NFL background with a great coach coaching him.

If some of you will be patient it will pay off.

Its going to work out eventually so you might as well get off his back because its going to work. Its just a matter of when.

he is not very good at getting off his blocks... he made a play 10 yards down field but if he could have won on the Block of the TE he might have made the play Behind the Los!

he has a long way to go to live up to his draft position! Hopefully he is better than his brother!!!

This is common for ALL rookie defenders. NFL Linemen and blockers are a world of difference from the college blockers they are used to facing.

Its the same with OLinemen, the defensive linemen they face are WAY better than the dlinemen they faced in college.

That's exactly why EVERYONE that understands the progression says BE PATIENT AND GIVE HIM TIME TO PROGRESS!

The play he ran down from behind was his fault in the first place. He got sealed.

However, on the next play, he had outside contain and forced the play back inside to Ayodele (I think).

Dallas Clark was owning him in the run game when they split Clark out in the slot.

Having said all that, I still like Carpenter and I think he will be a pretty good player.

The pressure was nice, but IIRC correctly the pressure was initiated by Ware. Peyton then rolled to his right and Carpenter was able to disengage from the block and chase Manning. It was a good play on Carpenter's part, but the play was really made by Ware's pressure.

That was a similar type deal. Ayodele busted through the middle and forced Addai to his right. Carpenter did make pretty good penetration and shed the blocker to make the play, but the real catalyst was Ayodele.

Overall I thought he played pretty decent. Seems to have skills at rushing the passer and was pretty solid in coverage. His ability to take on run blocks needs some work though.

I think the important thing on the "getting off his blocks" criticism is that it's not like he was getting physically dominated. On the Addai play, for instance, it's not like he got blocked out of the way and turned around... It looked more like he was holding his ground while reading the play and just waited too long to actually go for the running back. That could be simply the speed of the game being greater than he realized, which happens to every rookie at pretty much every position.

The guy is coming from a system where he got to use his quickness to avoid blockers to one where he's now supposed to take them on and read the play, and it's a big change. Considering how bad he looked in preseason, I thought he did more than fine in his first real NFL action. I was worried like everyone that he might be a bust, but Sunday he showed enough to not worry about that anymore... IMO.

I'd credit Carpenter on that one. If Carpenter had been blocked, Addai would have gone off-tackle, and Ayodele never would have gotten there. But Carpenter pushed Utecht into the backfield, Addai had to stop and try to go around him, and Ayodele was able to get off his block and make the play.

Although, if Carpenter had been blocked and Addai had gone off-tackle, Roy would have crushed him.

That, and the fact that NFL blockers know how to hold legally.

And by the way, getting off blocks against the run is yet another thing that Ware has become very good at.
