I'm looking for books/resources/etc. that teach the fundamentals and more about the game. I understand what stuff like man and zone coverage, pulling running plays, and the like are, but I want to have a more complete understanding of the game. Anyone know of any books or websites that teach this stuff?

I'd like to learn about the intricate parts of the game too. Such as what responsibilities the safeties have in specific blitz formations, what a corner is supposed to do in cover 3 vs. cover 1, what gaps and running lanes are supposed to be covered by which players, etc. Basically I'm looking for something that teaches 101 and fundamentals through intricate position stuff. Would just like to better understand the game I love. Sorry if this is in the wrong spot but I thought others might be interested in this kind of thing as well.

There are a numerous blogs you can find on the internet. One of my favorites is smartfootball.com. The person who runs it, Chris Brown, is astounding in what he writes. If you go on amazon, there is an endless number of coaching books that teaches fundamentals plus more advanced aspects of the game. I live off of these being I want to coach as a profession after college.

I can tell you, that in personal conversations, that Chris Brown of Smart Football marvels at Paul Zimmerman's ability to communicate the nuts and bolts of football.

I'm a huge fan of "The NEW Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football." So is Chris.

I like many of the resources that Staxxx has posted. You can find information to the point of overload there.

Jene Bramel has a series of articles on NFL defenses. It's on multiple sites. It's a very worthwhile read, even when he gets a detail or two wrong.

I think anyone worth his Xs and Os should own a copy of Rex Ryan's book, as the 46 is the worst described defense on the planet. Good journalists mess it up routinely.

Second worst is the flex. Some of the most accurate flex info is in Golenbock's book on the Cowboys. You need to know, though, that Tom Landry's idea of left and right are entirely the opposite of the common notion of left and right. Listening to Dick Nolan describe the flex requires flipping left and right in your head.

Look for playbook sites. Overviews of coaching clinics. Look for video of the team playing "your kind of plays".

If you have the cash, buy the two volume set "Vince Lombardi on Football". This is especially true if you're a Tom Landry fan, as the 4-3 Inside and 4-3 Outside Vince describes were Tom's first two defenses.

And no matter what I say, if it puts you to sleep, stop reading it and read something else that engages you. Football is entertainment for most of us and time is too short.

Take Your Eye Off the Ball...Pat Kirwin...that will be what you're looking for.
