Duck Commander Independence Bowl? I did a double take over that one.

I wonder if Uncle Si is the halftime entertainment?

Because, yes, America needs 39 bowl games, with the entire first week of them, up until the what, 18th or 19th game on the schedule not having a single ranked team.

Some football fans think that there is no such thing as too much football. I'm not one of them but well..

There probably are too many bowls. But when you have sponsors that cough up a lot of money and a portion of that ends up in a schools back pockets and the kids get to say they went to a bowl game.....I can live with it.

Well now they have all these different sports channels that broadcast games. On Saturdays if I am home I can switch to maybe 4 games if I want to..

Always about the money though. Yep!

When I was a kid there was the big four (Rose, Cotton, Orange, Sugar) then the Liberty Bowl, Gator Bowl, Sun Bowl and the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl. I think that was it back then (early 70's). You had to be a good team to get one. Rose Bowl was the Only one with two tie ins; Cotton was Southwest I think - Texas was usually in it; and there were no real other ties to any conference at least back then; the Sugar Bowl got the SEC team sometime in the 70's I believe. Then the Orange got the Big 8. There were some great matchups back then.

But you had to be a really good team. None of this 6-6 crap. Only a major conference team that had done something got in at 7-3 and not always. Back then it was said that if you wanted to be sure to be a bowl team you had to go 8-2 (lot of teams back then only played 10 games)

There are not too many bowls.
There are too many complainers, lol.

It is a good experience for the kids to go to a Bowl game.
For a lot of them it will be in a location they've never even visited.
That's a good reward for a year of hard work.

No one makes anyone watch these 3rd and 4th tier bowls.

The Astro Bluebonnet Bowl? That's a long time ago funny name.

I don't watch most of them. I don't really care about Utah State vs Temple (I made that up!)

I know I have flipped thru bowl games & the stands were far from full. I always wondered if they spent more money putting on the games than they take in with some of these obscure ones.

Oh well..to those that care knock yourself out watching them. You're right. Nobody has to watch.

Roll Tide! :)

I can live with it too.

But it certainly isn't for the money for the schools. Except for the top 5-6 top bowls, almost all teams LOSE money going to bowl games.
It does help to have the extra month of practice though. The young players greatly benefit for the next season.
And it does provide at least some additional exposure while appeasing a certain group of fans.

It's very interesting to me to see the enormous popularity that football has over soccer here. This was on full display in the past week when the college soccer championships were being played and on TV.

I'm in Northern Virginia, where one would expect the University of Virginia to be pretty big in terms of draw at say, sports bars. But, as the semi-final match between Virginia and the Maryland from Baltimore campus was being played, live, and on ESPN I think it was, I noticed several things:

1. In Buffalo Wild Wings, with a zillion TVs, only one small TV off in the corner had the game on at ALL. AND THERE WASN'T ANYTHING ELSE ON! No football, NOTHING. Every other TV was on talking heads, or *baseball* (Major League Baseball channel showing blah), or NFL channel or some such. I had to ask for the soccer game to be put on one of the big screens "since nothing else was on"!

2. Nobody was even aware there was a soccer game for a semi-local team for a college CHAMPIONSHIP run being played!

3. The stands at the game itself were almost completely EMPTY.

Boggle, it just blew me away. This is about how it REALLY IS when it comes to Americans (by and large) and the supposed growing love for soccer. At least at the college level. World Cup come and gone? Then who cares any more, right?

Anyway, to me it was an astonishing realization of the disparity in popularity between the two sports. Wow.

It certainly feels right to say there are just too many garbage bowls.
But in the end why should the kids from utah state (local kid at QB... at least pre-injury) and temple be denied a bowl experience.
Money-wise there really is no benefit to cancelling some low-end bowls. those sponsors and locales are not helping any other bowl and do not detract from any big-time games at all.

Just let them go play and enjoy a week of Bowl experience... but I am almost never watching those lower tier bowls or buying tickets.

Clemson all over Oklahoma...very early.
Kind of surprising with Clemson losing their OC.

Here's a thought for my Big 12 friends to contemplate:
Will Clemson get their next national Title before Oklahoma?
Before any Big 12 team?
