Boys/Saints OL and Offense Report: How drives fail

I wanted to do the whole game but I’ve got to get to work, so here’s the first half on offense and on the OL and I hope to get to the second half later on. The Cliffs notes version: I thought the line, except for Doug Free, had a good first half. Romo had a bad game, some bad reads/decisions/throws that were costly. I want to see the second half again, but it looks like he's hearing footsteps and is rushing things. Free wasn’t good, he had two costly pressures in the first half and then more badness in the second half. The tight ends, especially Hanna, really hurt us.

The Cowboys came out in 12 personnel and stayed there for most of the half. They thought they could take advantage of the Saints poor run defense. For the most part, the line was effective in this, but the tight ends failed them on the first two possessions.

Firtst possession: Run left, the line blocked well, Murray had a seam between Smith and a pulling Berny, would have had positive yardage, possibly a nice gain if Murray could have slipped by or beat a linebacker. But Witten missed his block and his guy blew up the play for a loss. Second down, the Saints went nickel, pass to Hanna for a decent gain, third and four.

We went no huddle to catch NO in the nickel. They were confused and scrambling pre-snap. Run right. I had no problems with this call, we had a favorable matchup. But Hanna slid downfield and just totally missed a block on a corner. He slapped the guy on the chest with his hand as the cb flew by him. I’d like to see this on the coaches film…it looked like Murray easily had the first down but it looked like the cb brought him down behind the scrum. Three and out.

Second possesion, after the fumbled punt. Good run on first down. Nice play design on third and one, had the first down, but Hanna jumped just before the snap. Third and six. Free’s first of many pass pro problems, his guy flushed Romo, Leary also allowed a push up the middle. Field goal.

Third possession. The line and TE’s all blocked well and we ran it down their throats. The best line blocking since the St Louis game. Smith looked really good to this point, as did the interior of the line. Leary and Smith were really working effectively on the left side, Fred made some nice second level blocks. Free was okay too. TD

Fourth possession. They had us backed up at the 10. I put this possession on Romo, Free, and Rob Ryan. Second and eight, Romo threw a pass too low to Williams. Would have been third and 4, instead a third and 8.

Third down, the mad scientist showed up. The saints showed six near the LOS, no defender had their hand on the ground. They rushed four, and Free didn’t react fast enough. His guy made an inside move, flushed Romo which allowed Bern’s guy to release outside and chase Romo, who threw it away. Win Ryan.

Fourth possession. This one really hurt and completely turned the game around. We ditch the 12 personnel and go 5 wideouts.Nice first down completion, then on second and two, Romo made a bad read/decision. He had Beasley sitting down just beyond the first down marker with no one on him, and had Witten who had broken totally free towards the left sideline 15 yards downfield. Romo instead threw into tight coverage to Williams, ball tipped away. We thad that first down cold, Tony made a bad decision. So third and two. Romo to Beasley on a slant, the db made a nice break and tipped it away. From the network feed, I couldn’t tell if the pass was behind Beasley or if the db just made a nice play. But three and out. Second down was the killer there. Saints score just before halftime, 28-10.

Just a couple of thoughts on the 12 personnel. Despite the results, I thought the line run blocked well from the 12 in the first half. Hanna is killing us in this formation. This has shown up all year long. He just isn’t reliable as a blocker and costs too many plays/possessions. He doesn’t really stretch the field enough to deal with the blocking woes. At this point, I’m reduced to hoping we’ll start giving Escobar some more reps if we stick with the 12. I know he can’t block either, but at least he potentially offers some tougher match ups in coverage for defenses. It’s just not happening with Hanna on the field. We’ll have good drives but except for the St Louis game, can’t sustain anything consistently.

That final drive of the first half was a killer. A total unmitagated disaster and both the coordinator and QB were complicit in this crime. Going with an empty backfield when all you need is TWO yards? Romo throwing to TWill in triple coverage than behind Beasley on a short crossing route. Horrible.

Well, it was a end of half hurry-up situation so I don't fault the empty backfield on second and third downs. I thought that three-and-out was on Tony.

Here's the second half. Free followed his bad first half with a bad second half. Romo did the same. Overall, all the linemen except Free played well for the most part, which is weird to say in such a beatdown. I thought Leary had the best game he's had in awhile solid in protection and run blocking. Fred was solid. Bern had one costly miss, allowing Jordan to break free on the play that led to the Romo intentional grounding after the onside kick. That was the only significant pressure up the middle that I remember, a nice improvement from the interior. I thought Smith played very well, really good run blocking and no trouble in pass protection, until the last series of the game where he lost his man on consecutive snaps. Free got eaten up by Cameron Jordan.

For a game with no turnovers, this was a pretty bad game for Romo. He was off target enough times to kill at least two drives and didn't see open receivers to kill at least three others. Free killed a couple, and the tight ends killed a couple early.

Here are the possessions, if anyone cares at this point. In total, the Cowboys had 10 possessions and didn't pick up a first down on 7 of them. It's hard to say that 4/5 of the line played well with seven lost possessions, but they did. Other things went wrong.

First possession A couple of plays in 12 formation then ditched it for empty backfields/5 wides. Started out promising with a couple of first downs, one thanks to a penalty. Then on second down with good protection, Romo overthrows an open Dez deep. Would have taken a good pass, but it was there. Missed opportunity. Third down, Free gets beat badly, Romo spins away and gets sacked by Leary’s man. This wasn’t on Leary, squarely on Free. Punt.

2nd possession 12 package, 1st down, screen to Hanna, Williams messes up what looked like a good gain by whiffing on his man who comes up fast and blows up the play. Too bad, it was nicely set up. Third and five, another bad Romo read/decision. He throws to Witten to the left flat, the cb covering Williams started breaking towards Witten before Romo cocked his arm, made the play. He left Williams all alone down the left sideline with only a safety near the hashmarks anywhere near him. This was the play that Collinsworth talked about as a Ryan “trap coverage”. It looked like Tony locked in on Witten . Punt.

3rd possession TD drive, all passes. Good blocking by all, with one break. On the 3rd play, Free got knocked flat on his butt by Cam Jordan, causing a Romo throwaway. A Saints cb had lined up offsides, led to 2nd and 5. Two plays later was the long Dez completion.

4th possession, after the onside kick. !st down, tipped ball on a Beasley screen, play was set up pretty well. 2nd down, Berny and Free mess up a stunt handoff, ends up with a Romo intentional grounding. Looked more on Leary than Free. 3rd and 21, nothing. Punt.

5th possession Two runs for three yards. 3rd down, deep to Williams against a three man rush, inc. Romo didn’t see a wide open Harris sitting at the first down marker in the middle of the field with no one within five yards of him.

6th possession. 2nd down, Free ends up on his hands and knees while his man sacks Romo. Smith’s man also broke free late, the first misstep I saw from him the entire game.3rd down, Smith makes his second misstep of the game, gets all out of sorts and his man and Free’s man meet at Romo, back to back sacks. Punt.

Great posts. We are not going anywhere this season if Romo doesn't elevate his game. He needs to loosen up and start slinging it to Dez.

He can do that but it is going to result in more turnovers. This offense has no creativity whatsoever. After the bye week, if we see Dez in motion maybe this offense will have a pulse. But until then, I think everyone is going to be frustrated with Romo and this vanilla offense.

It was so hurry up that after it failed, the Saints had time to get the ball and drive field for a TD.

The 12 personnel with Hanna is a galacticaly stupid idea if they rarely/never throw him the ball on the move and/ attack the seams. 12 would be far more effective with Parnell given our idiotic play selection. Dallas should watch about 10 minutes of Texans tape to figure out how to do this. We have done the play action half roll to the backside once for 21 yards and have not done it since.

Heck even 'spider 2 y banana' would be worthwhile on occaision.
