Well this year seemed We seemed to be in draft mode a lot longer than normal. We were not even able to think about the crowd that would defend a 8-8 season as a non losing season. So we started thinking about the draft much earlier. Some of those "we" are the draft geeks that visit and participate on a regular basis in the draft zone when most others only show up about a month or so before the draft. Yes..."We" are better than you so there...take that and I don't care if you like it because clearly we are better fans than the rest and we care about the draft more than the rest of you so go boo hoo in the corner wondering why the bearded one is belittling your fandom and man hood. (relax...I am kidding...mostly).
So the build up was a bit more than it was in past years and part of that big build up was the idea that we are going to get a top 10 pick...nay dare I say...Top 5 pick.
We have also seen the cowboys recent drafts where the Oline has been something that has been corrected and the effort has been made to correct it. Now an argument can be made about if we wanted other players and so on but that is for a different thread, start your own if you must, but the idea is that the Oline has gotten the attention of the first round and also Collins who should have been a first rounder but we are lucky he was not.
We thought that it was not time to make the Defensive line the priority. Although we have take our second round picks (one even trading up for it) to address the D line the past two years with D-Law and Randy "Puff the Magic Dragon" Gregory. So there has been some resources put in the line including a failed attempt at bringing in Greg "I wear Crazy Contacts sometimes" Hardy for a test run that failed.
However after looking at the draft and the draftees we came to the a crazy conclusion. Most did not like the DE or DTs that would be rated as a top 5 Pick. Bosa or Buckner...oohh those guys have cooties and they are not productive and would be a 3-4 DE (Buckner) or would be a Greg Ellis clone and are just not worth the top 5 Pick...not for these Cowboys fans.
So We all wanted a shiny new QB to take over for Romo since he has had a number of injuries the last few years and is not going to jump into the wayback machine with Sherman and Peabody to start aging in reverse (that is a fancy way of saying he is getting older).
But those Pesky Rams and Filthy Eagles jumped us to get the shiny new QBs that most everyone wanted. So...No Goff or Wentz for you Jerry Jones.
Keep in mind this was going into the week of the draft and most did not want the DE/DT available to us and we are not going to get the QBs that most wanted.
What WILL we do?!?! <cue ominous music?
Seems like the word came down that it will wind up being Ramsey if he is there and Zeke if he is not. WHAT! First it was the rams and the ealges dictating who we could not have, not it might be that team with electric bolt on the side of their helmets telling us who we may or might take.
Turns out they have nothing to do with it after all...They take the one guy who we thought might only be taken if we traded down. So they take Joey "My name sounds like mafia but my voice sounds like surfer" Bosa.
We have Ramsey sitting there and that seems to be it for the Zeke crowd. After all...like the Dothroki women say..it is known....that if Ramsey is there we take him if the chargers take him we take Zeke.
So...With the fourth pick in 2016 NFL Draft the Cowboys select....RB Ezekiel Elliot Ohio State. The Bearded one is happy. He wanted Zeke over Ramsey and he got what he wanted. Thankfully the wife was not around because if she saw that I was happy, even for a brief moment, she would swoop in like a Valkyrie and slay me....I keed wife...I keed.
Towards middle of the draft we start hearing rumblings of Jerry and Crew going back into the war room and working the phones. Hmm...could it be that the apple of Jerry's eye is falling and he wants to trade up to get him. Well later we find out that Jerry is indeed trying to trade up for Paxton "I look like the guy who played the king in the Tudors show" Lynch.
Well it turns out that The Broncos beat Jerry and moves up to take the QB. That QB starts crying on national TV...hmm I don't know if the king did that on Tudors or not. Seemed odd to see a QB in a Bowling Alley crying about being drafted to play football. But maybe that is just me.
We read all about the fancy stuff going on behind the scenes with the Peter King article...now there is a REAL King...to bad for the unfortunate first name, bet he got picked on in school. So I will not go into the details other than Jerry did not get what he wanted. Part of me is sad as I liked Lynch as a possible future Starter here...other part of me was happy because I did not want to give up the picks.
So Jerry fools the world...He shocks them I tell you with the WOW..>WHOA pick of the second round. Those Broncos take away his QB and the Browns take away DE Ogbah so Jerry goes with...OLB J.Smith from ND. A top 5 talent who fell in the draft because of a serious injury that will probably keep him out at least a year...if not the rest of his career. Jerry seems to trust the doctors that say he can have along career.
Next Jerry and crew get a good 3Tech DT in M.Collins from Nebraska. Someone who I feel that they believe will start at the 3 Tech early on while Crawford is being possibly pushed out to help with our drug depleted DE department. I like this pick. I think Rod did as well. I have a feeling this is a guy Rod really liked and frankly I thought they would have waited till later to get Sheldon Day as it has been reported that Rod really liked him...one would logically conclude that Rod and Crew liked Collins more.
Oh that wild Jerry fools most of us and Takes Charles Tapper at DE from Oklahoma. For the last few months/weeks Broaddus and Brugler have been doing the Draft show and everytime they would talk about a Defensive player from Oklahoma they would say how the Oklahoma scheme the last couple of years has really hurt the Oklahoma players that have been there for a few years. Did not allow them to shine and do what they could do best. Keep that in mind with Tapper. Seemed like his numbers were better a few years ago. But he still has good tape and I think he might be one of those players that actually do better in the pros than he did in college. AKA a diamond in the rough...AKA a Steal..AKA a future war daddy..AKA Named Tapper but instead of tapping on the QBs he might be Knocking down the door.
Word was that they tried to get Connor Cook but the Raider jumped up and got him. Personally I am glad as I did not like that Cook guy...he never seemed to get better in college and word was that he was a jerk. Not that a QB has to be nice but He was one of the few top tier QBs I did not want us taking...so I was ok with it.
So instead we wait to the bottom of the fourth and get what would essentially be a fifth round pick to take QB Dak Prescott. We met or worked out with him enough that we all expected him. I am meh on him. but getting him here is better than trading up and giving up all kinds of picks instead of using some on defense.
I will let the other picks go for now. Not that I like them or don't like them. Just don't feel like wasting more of your time on the picks and who knows what the 6th round will bring...kind of a grab bag and luck. The picks seem good and have some traits you look for with plenty of Upside but who knows.
A few more things and I will give your weary eyes a break.
For those that say this is the worst or a bad draft...please with the extremism...tis so old and predictable on the forum. On the flip side, for those saying it was the best draft eva or a GREAT!!! draft...come on now. Let's see how this thing pans out before we go to either polar extreme.
For those complaining about it being a Jerry vs McClay draft.....oh good grief. Jerry Jones is the OWNER and the GM. Jerry has made it plain to all that he has the final say in all things. He will listen and go along with coaches and scouts but he has the final say. If there is a tie, he has the final say. If he really wants to draft a player but others are against it...he has the final say. Sometimes he goes with what he wants, sometimes he goes with what the others want. He has the final say.
He may or may not cede more power or duties to Stephen or McClay but again at the end of the Day...He has final say.
So whether McClay gets every pick he wants or not...Jerry still has final say. Now one can use that to continue to fuel the eternal argument among cowboys fans and just use it as another excuse to complain about jerry but at the end of the day as Long as Jerry owns this team and keeps the title GM...that's just the way it is.
Ok...Peace out
