BR: 5 Cuts That Could Create Serious Cap Space for the Dallas Cowboys

For Ware, I could see a restructure with a much lower cap value, and lots of incentives. Allows a nod to player/agent dignity, while still putting a cut on the books. JJ doesn't tend to like that sort of contract, but I have seen it show up a bit more recently. Would probably require Ware to understand the value of sticking with a storied franchise throughout his career.

Ware has no leverage: 6 sacks, over 30, and doesn't practice much bc his body is breaking down. He was the leader of the 3rd worst D in league history last season. He is no longer a difference maker or disruptive on a consistent basis. Where is the leverage? He needs to take a drastic pay cut or be released. Similar to Free, he would make more here at a reduced salary then he could fetch in the open market.

One of the problems I see with DeMarcus Ware's contract is that he is now a DE being paid 3-4 OLB money.

We should have stayed with the 3-4 defense until we were ready to send Ware off into the sunset, but I understand the desire to switch back to the 4-3 now as a long-term change for the defense.

I sincerely hope the switch to the 4-3 wasn't an over reaction from the D's inability to stop RG3 and the gimmick offense that has proven to have plenty of weaknesses...still doesn't make sense to me.

No, I don't believe that at all. In fact, I think the 3-4 is actually better suited to stop that gimmick offense.

I think Jason Garrett simply appreciates the history of the Dallas Cowboys, including the 4-3 defense. I also think that the 4-3 is the long term solution because of the desire to attempt to push the pocket with four down linemen instead of three and a linebacker or two.

Also, defenses (and offenses) shift with the college talent. Most of the projected future talent coming out of the draft the next four years, minimum (Freshman to Senior) are 4-3 defensive linemen. Teams adjust accordingly, just like the "safety drought" of the 2000-2010 decade.

I meant without counting Ware, in a Doug Free-style showdown. I'm also leaving out Austin since it's not a well-kept secret that he will be released and I'm leaving out Free and Bernadeau because I think there's a chance that one of them could be released after camp next year if the team finds a starting caliber lineman in the draft.
The 1 thing that they really can't do is to carry Ware's non restructured contract past March. They could get under tne cap but would have no ability to sign free agents.

They could just cut him, let him test the market and then re-sign him if the price is reasonable. Other teams have done this with some older veterans.

It wasn't. I think it was to address the importance of turnovers in winning games, knowing they could take the Bears' DC from them when they did it. Garrett at the time also said that, in the new CBA and the importance of injuries under the new agreement, they wanted a system that was easier to learn for the players they were getting and plugging in off the street. Personally, I suspect Jerry really didn't like Ryan or there was a style or effort mismatch there, but that's pure supposition on my part. He certainly said nice things about Rob after the butt whoopin' we got in NOLA last year.

Jerry's a professional. He's always helped the people who have been a part of the Cowboys organization.

As for Rob, he got fired because he wasn't showing up for work. Plain and simple. The latter half of the season, Eberflus was the weekday defensive coordinator. Combine that with the lack of delivering on results after handing Rob a ton of players he wanted in free agency and the draft, and he got the axe.

All that crap he drew all over a white board while interviewing with Jason three years ago never happened. And so he was let go.

Count me as one who doesn't buy that story.

I do remember reading that awhile back but thought it would've blown up media wise if true. Figured he was sleeping em off...but damn yeah not every day/week. I like Rod for his CHI DC tenure but thought the initial Kiffin hire negated any chance of him simply becoming the new DC(which made a lot more sense). That's ugly if true, but makes you wonder why SP would hire him with those habits? Rod should've been DC last season if the 4-3 was the new scheme for the future.

I'd be completely fine with the team cutting anyone not named Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, and Travis Frederick.

Yes, last year the franchise tag was 2M higher for DE than OLB. The issue came up when there was speculation about Spencer being franchised.

right. That makes it doubly suck that Jerry overspent on a now submarining player. I despise that the fanbase wants to keep these players that sabotage the entire organization.

Marinelli will make a strong case for keeping Ware, I am sure of that. Jerry will probably settle for a restructure.

I was thinking Ware might be willing to take a pay cut if he knew the money saved was used to sign guys like Hatcher and Spencer, but I doubt things work that way at his agents headquarters.

The Miles contract is just a joke.

Pay a guy 1/3rd of the overall amount in the first year on a contract without a signing bonus and 4 years later still have $8M in dead money if he's cut.
