The Dallas Cowboys return from their bye week to visit the New York Giants in an NFC East matchup on Sunday night. The Cowboys are a perfect 4-0 on the road this season and have won the last three meetings straight up and against the spread versus the Giants, who will be looking to break a five-game losing streak.
Point spread: The Cowboys opened as 2.5-point favorites; the total was 47 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)
NFL pick, via Odds Shark computer: 28.4-17.7 Cowboys
Why the Cowboys can cover the spread
Dallas got some much-needed rest during a week off following a trip to London, where the team disposed of the Jacksonville Jaguars rather easily in a 31-17 victory as a seven-point favorite. The most significant part of that win was the way Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo looked after missing their previous game due to a back injury.
Romo looked like his old self, completing 20 of 27 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns against the Jaguars, including two to wide receiver Dez Bryant. Dallas is an incredible 8-0 ATS in its last eight road games after a bye week and should be ready to go again here.
Why the Giants can cover the spread
As bad as New York played last week, the team still had plenty of opportunities to not just cover the spread but also win the game. The Giants lost to the San Francisco 49ers 16-10 with quarterback Eli Manning throwing five interceptions. They were driving for scores multiple times when Manning ended up getting picked off and still had a shot until the end of the game.
Despite their struggles, this is still a divisional game, and the two teams know each other well. There’s a reason the point spread is only a little more than a field goal in favor of the Cowboys because it might just be that close.
Smart Pick
Everything seems to point to Dallas in this spot, but most bettors know to expect the unexpected when something looks too easy. The betting trends are so lopsided for the Cowboys that picking either of these teams becomes dangerous. Fortunately, there’s still the total, with some favorable trends supporting a high-scoring game.
The over is 7-2 in Dallas’ last nine games following a bye week and 6-2 in New York’s past eight games as a home underdog. In addition, the over has cashed in nine of the previous 11 meetings between the teams, including each of the last four. Take the over to hit again.
