The Dallas Cowboys may seek to upgrade their running back position “in a big way,” possibly before the trade deadline according to Ian Rapaport of NFL Network.

Late last week, the possibility of Adrian Peterson being traded as part of a complete roster overhaul for the Minnesota Vikings was raised by Tom Powers of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. While trading Peterson idea is little more than conjecture at this point, the recent surprise deal that sent Trent Richardson to Indianapolis certainly sets a precedent.

Dallas is looking for a back. Minnesota may be looking to revamp its roster sooner rather than later. Here are some reasons why the two teams might discuss a blockbuster deal involving Peterson.

A few reasons Minnesota could consider such a move

1. While Peterson has been dominant, teams don’t ride running backs to championships anymore. It’s a passing league, which requires a franchise QB much more than a franchise running back. At least one first-round pick acquired by dealing Peterson could land them their franchise signal-caller.

2. Defense is still critical to postseason success. Minnesota has shown this year that it is sorely lacking in defensive playmakers. Without them, all the Peterson highlight-reel runs do little for the team. Trading him could lead to draft picks that would upgrade the Vikings defense.

3. Minnesota has never lived down their trade with Dallas for Herschel Walker. How fitting would it be if they could exact revenge by getting Dallas to pay too much for Peterson?

A few reasons Dallas might pull the trigger on such a trade

1. Dallas is desperate for postseason success. Despite all his many accomplishments, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would seemingly do anything to get back to a championship game before the window closes on his core group of players.

2. DeMarco Murray is injured yet again, with the prospect of missing several games, yet again. He was supposed to be Dallas’ franchise running back, but he can’t stay healthy. What’s more, he has teased Dallas with the potential to do all that they had hoped for. He has the speed, the power, the cutback ability and the pass-protection chops needed for an all purpose back. But not the durability.

3. December football. The ability to grind out yards on the ground hasn’t been associated with the Cowboys for some time now. But December football—and certainly playoff football—is about being more physical than the other team and closing out games. Peterson would give Dallas that quality in spades.

4. Dallas could bundle Murray and Miles Austin as part of the trade.

While it’s just a big hypothetical at this point, the prospect of a potentially large trade looming certainly makes this one tantalizing to consider.
