Dallas Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey is dealing with a back injury, and his official playing status for Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals has yet to be announced.
Continue for updates.
Latest on Bailey's Practice Status
Thursday, Oct. 6
According to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano, Bailey will not practice Thursday, and the Cowboys may be forced to sign a kicker as a contingency plan.
Cowboys Working Out Potential Replacements
Thursday, Oct. 6
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the Cowboys are working out a "group of kickers," including former Bears kicker Robbie Gould.
Bailey Is Model of Consistency At Kicker Position
Per Nick Eatman of the team's official website, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett first became aware of Bailey's back injury prior to their Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and while Bailey played through it, he missed a 47-yard field goal.
The 28-year-old former Oklahoma State standout has made eight of 10 field goals attempted so far this season and converted all 11 of his extra-point tries.
He was named to his first career Pro Bowl last season when he led the NFL by making 93.8 percent of his field goals and all 25 of his extra-point attempts.
Bailey is the all-time NFL leader in career field-goal percentage at 89.9 percent. He is a big-time weapon for a Cowboys team that moves the ball on offense but tends to stall out prior to reaching the end zone under rookie quarterback Dak Prescott.
If the Cowboys are forced to sign another kicker for Week 5, they will have to make room on their roster by releasing another player.
Bailey is practically automatic, so the bigger concern is that turning to an unknown at the position could cost Dallas a critical home game against the Bengals.
