This AFO brace must easily conceal under a sock. I don't see anything resembling a brace.

He apparently is still wearing a modified AFO. The no brace reports were in reference to the knee. So no news! I also falsely got my hopes up at some point today.

I'm excited, but live action will tell. One of the few times preseason games interest me.

he is not 100%
would you be worried about an injury if he was not wearing some protective gear?

it is not an AFO, but some type of custom ankle brace that other players have worn for high ankle sprains.

see: http://www.dallascowboys.com/content/jaylon-smith-guarded-optimism

"For starters, there’s the brace the 2016 secondround pick out of Notre Dame has been wearing on his left leg. It’s not an AFO (ankle/foot orthoses) brace, which has been widely reported. It’s actually a custommade Richie Brace, with plastic, bendable, hinged sides, much like an air-cast for a high-ankle sprain."

I’ve heard some doctors and trainers, who haven’t ever seen Jaylon, say that there’s no way he could play in the NFL with an AFO brace, and they’re right,” said Cowboys associate athletic trainer/director of rehabilitation Britt Brown. “With the brace he is wearing, Jaylon can take his natural linebacker stance and come off the ball the same way he would without the brace.”

So Jaylon was to practice every other day...probably some sideline stuff....

Well, he has practiced all 3 days. And supposedly will have tomorrow off.
They did say, and went by it. To have him do 8 plays of padded practice. And so,e light contact.

This is encouraging.
Sean Lee and Willie McGinnest had some good things to say. I'll,save that for tomorrow to post. Running on fumes right now. Lol...

Steady progression is a wise approach considering the context of the particular player.

Allow him time to acclimate based on his workload and corresponding response.

I am very encouraged by day one but realize full recovery will be a progression, only time will tell how long.

Watched all the video on Jaylon from first padded practice. Here is my assessment: I think the nerve will need to improve more if he is going to be NFL starter. Now he hasn't hit in pads in over 500 days but some core movements shouldn't be affected by that time-off. Here is what I saw:

* Doesn't appear to have ability to jump well and swat passes away.
* Change of direction looks slightly delayed. You really get sense of this after you watch Jaylon then watch Hitchens (who looks great btw).
* Doesn't trust the leg yet - lifted his leg immediately instead of planting on first contact with OL.

Jaylon will get better but I am not convinced it will be enough UNLESS the nerve continues to heal then all bets are off. Jaylon walks with noticable limp but might be most positive players I have ever followed and is literally cartoon character looking LB you would draw up.

Yet this organization led some to believe that they remained helpful that he would help them last year in the event of a Super Bowl run? I'm not sure what is worse..the organization for creating this FAKE buzz at times....or the segment of the fanbase that believes it!

I remember saying at the time....if this kid....who had not even put on pads since college....who had not tackled anybody since college...who had never even taken on a blocker in the NFL....could come in and be BETTER than the LBers we had playing all year....either this kid was destined to be Lawrence Taylor....or the people we have a LBer are just awful!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Cowboys...so this is no Debbie downer talk....I'm just saying he looks like a JAG right now....hope he becomes EVERYTHING people project....but lets stop pretending we see things that are NOT there!

Relax. I have zero worries about Jaylon. He's wearing whatever level of protection our training staff is comfortable with him wearing and I am good with that.

Which organization were you following? The Dallas Cowboys drafted him last year and made it clear the plan was to give him last year to heal with this year being his actual first year playing....

wasn't he kept on the roster the majority of the year...and wasn't the ringmaster jerry jones constantly dropping hints that he might be ready for the playoffs?
