Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke highly of Brandon Weeden on Tuesday as the quarterback prepares to enter the starting lineup for the injured Tony Romo. Jones stated it's "a thing of beauty" when the veteran backup throws the football.

Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News passed along comments the outspoken owner made during a radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. He spoke highly of the quarterback's ability to deliver strikes from the pocket.

"Frankly, you won't see a more gifted passer," Jones said.

Weeden's career numbers don't exactly match up with the praise, though. He's thrown more interceptions (28) than touchdowns (27) in his career while completing just 56 percent of his throws. His passer rating across parts of four seasons is a lackluster 73.4.

That said, the Cowboys have no choice but to support him. Romo is expected to miss at least seven weeks of action with a broken left collarbone, according to Todd Archer of ESPN, so the burden to keep the offense moving falls squarely on the Oklahoma State product. He did complete all seven passes in relief against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Dallas is also working to find another reserve at the position. Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram noted Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson are going through workouts with the Cowboys on Tuesday.

None of those options has enjoyed consistent success in the NFL, either. That means the Cowboys will be banking on Weeden to live up to the high standard Jones seemingly expects from him.

The task is even more difficult without Dez Bryant, who's without a concrete date for his return after a foot injury. That means the running game, led by Joseph Randle, will need to set the tone in order to open up lanes for the passing attack.

All told, the signs point toward the Cowboys offense struggling while waiting for its stars to return. But Jones clearly isn't giving up hope Weeden can enjoy some newfound success in the meantime.
