According to ESPN.com's Todd Archer, Jones told reporters he was frustrated after the Cowboys were unable to move back into Round 1 on Thursday night to select Memphis Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch.
"I got to bed about 3 [a.m.] thinking about the Lynch thing, got up at 6 [a.m.] and before the morning was over had talked to six people about how I messed it up," Jones said. "I was still mad about it the next morning."
Archer reported the Cowboys tried trading up with the Seattle Seahawks to snag Lynch, but Seattle turned them down before the Denver Broncos struck a deal and acquired their future franchise gunslinger.
"I probably should have overpaid here," Jones added.
But with Lynch already adjusting to life as a member of the reigning Super Bowl champions, Jones and the Cowboys will need to turn their attention to Prescott—who could be the heir to 36-year-old starter Tony Romo if he develops properly.
"To be here when Romo is here is a whale of an opportunity for the development of a young quarterback," Jones said Saturday, according to USA Today's Eric Prisbell. "This year was important to start, if you will, down the road of developing a young quarterback."
Dallas will need to exercise patience when it comes to fine-tuning Prescott's game, but the Senior Bowl's Most Outstanding Player is in position to succeed.
The key for the Cowboys moving forward will be keeping Romo upright and healthy a year after injuries limited him to just four appearances.
Not only would doing so drastically improve Dallas' chances of vaulting back into the NFC East title chase, but it would also take the pressure off Prescott as he sits back and soaks up all the knowledge Romo and head coach Jason Garrett have to offer.
