After searching for outside alternatives to handle backup quarterback duties, the Dallas Cowboys will go in-house for at least one week with Kellen Moore added to their roster.
According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are bringing up Moore from their practice squad instead of signing a free agent.
However, this may not turn into a permanent move, as Rapoport also reported the Cowboys acquired veteran Matt Cassel from the Buffalo Bills.
The addition of Moore to the active roster comes shortly after the team officially announced that starting quarterback Tony Romo was placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list after suffering a broken collarbone during Sunday's win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Romo's injury designation means he will not be eligible to return for eight weeks. ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that Dallas was bringing in Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and Christian Ponder for workouts on Tuesday.
Per ESPN San Antonio, one reason the Cowboys favored Moore over fellow practice-squad quarterback Jameill Showers is his experience in offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's system.
Cassel's presence could mean this is just a temporary move for Moore, since the former Bill can't learn the offense and develop a rapport with his new teammates in time to be ready for Week 3.
The 26-year-old Moore, who played college football at Boise State and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2010, has never appeared in an NFL game. He's spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions, which included two seasons working with Linehan in 2012-13.
Since Moore is only being asked to serve as the backup quarterback with Dallas preparing for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, it's unlikely he will see his first game action barring an injury to Brandon Weeden.
However, Weeden's career has been erratic, so Dallas could call upon Moore at some point to make a play. His relationship with Linehan will help his confidence and the Cowboys if that situation arises.
