Rookie La'el Collins has been named the new Dallas Cowboys starter at left guard, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
Collins won't be the only new starter on offense when the team faces the New York Giants in Week 7, following its bye. Head coach Jason Garrett announced Wednesday that Matt Cassel would be taking over as the team's starting quarterback for Brandon Weeden while Tony Romo remains sidelined, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
Collins, 22, signed with the Cowboys this offseason after going undrafted. Though he was considered one of the top talents in the draft, teams decided against drafting him after he was questioned in the investigation of the shooting death of his former girlfriend, though he was never named a suspect and never charged with a crime.
Collins takes over for Ronald Leary, who has had his struggles this year. Collins already played one game in place of Leary, who was out with a back injury, and according to Pro Football Focus, the rookie has yet to allow a pressure on the quarterback in 57 snaps.
This change was inevitable. Collins is a big talent who was expected to be a first-round selection in this year's draft before he was questioned by the authorities, so his ascension to the starting position was a matter of when, not if.
Still, it's unlikely the move will dramatically bolster an offense without its two best players, Romo and wideout Dez Bryant. Collins will bring more stability to an offensive line that was already good, but Dallas' current issues on that side of the ball were never centered around the play upfront.
