The move comes on the same day TMZ Sports reported a warrant had been issued for Whitehead's arrest in Prince William County, Virginia, stemming from an alleged June 22 shoplifting.
Police issued the warrant for Whitehead's arrest after he failed to make a July 6 court appearance. According to Virginia court records, the 25-year-old has a new arraignment hearing scheduled for Aug. 10 for petit larceny and failure to appear.
Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports broke down why the Cowboys made today's decision:
Rapoport shared a clip discussing Whitehead's situation on NFL Network. Rapoport reported flight records appear to show Whitehead arriving in Virginia after the alleged shoplifting occurred:
The Cowboys signed Whitehead as an undrafted free agent in 2015, and he was entering the final year of his three-year, $1.58 million deal with the team.
In 30 games for Dallas, Whitehead had 20 carries for 189 yards and nine receptions for 64 yards. He made his biggest impact on special teams, returning 33 kickoffs for 846 yards and 44 punts for 305 yards.
