The Oakland Raiders are 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games, and the Dallas Cowboys are just 1-9 ATS the last 10 times they've been favored by a touchdown or more at home.

Oakland and Dallas get together for a little holiday football Thursday afternoon in Arlington with the Cowboys motivated to stay atop the NFC East.

Point spread: Cowboys opened as 6.5-point favorites, but the number was bet quickly to double digits at most shops; the total was 45.5. (Line updates and matchup report)

Odds Shark computer prediction: 23.9-17.6 Cowboys

Why the Raiders can cover the spread

Oakland is 4-7 but has lost some close games this year to the Colts, Chiefs, Giants and, last week, the Titans. That's why the Raiders are 6-4-1 ATS on the season. Oakland ranks fourth in the league in rushing at 141 yards per game and eighth vs. the run. In the NFL, teams that out-rush their opponents cover the spread about 65 percent of the time.

While they don’t play often, the Raiders have won three of four trips to Dallas since 1983, according to Odds Shark’s NFL database.

Why the Cowboys can cover the spread

Dallas might have picked up a little momentum with its victory Sunday over the rejuvenated Giants. The Cowboys blew a two-score lead but drove 64 yards in the final minutes for a game-winning field goal.

So Dallas leads the NFC East by a tiebreaker over Philly. Statistically speaking, the Cowboys don't look like much, but they're 8-3 against the betting numbers.

Smart Pick

Odds Shark's computer is predicting Dallas to win but Oakland to cover in a game that stays UNDER its total. Raiders QB Matt McGloin owns a 4/1 TD/INT ratio over the last two games, and the Cowboys are not exactly monsters on defense. Also, Dallas is one of those teams prone to letdowns. The Cowboys should win this game, but that spread is probably too much.

Trends:

  • Raiders 3-1 SU at Dallas since 1983
  • Raiders 5-1 ATS past six road games
  • Cowboys 1-9 ATS past 10 as home chalk of seven or more points
