The Dallas Cowboys drafted linebacker Randy Gregory in the second round to bolster a lackluster pass rush, but they lost him to an ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Gregory Helped Off Field

Sunday, Sept. 13

Gregory’s leg buckled as he was engaged with an offensive lineman, and he was subsequently helped off the field. Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News noted the linebacker was questionable to return, but the injury looked serious, as Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated highlighted:

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted Gregory could not put any weight on his ankle once he reached the sideline.

Gregory tallied 17.5 sacks the past two seasons at Nebraska, and he looked like his college self before the setback, as Louis Riddick of ESPN pointed out:

Considering Dallas finished a disappointing 24th in the league last year in sacks and failed to consistently put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, Gregory is a critical piece for a defensive unit with Super Bowl aspirations.

His presence is even more important in the early going because Greg Hardy is out for the first four games with a suspension. All four of those games are against NFC opponents, including the Week 1 showdown with the Giants and a Week 2 clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If Dallas hopes to pick up critical head-to-head wins against fellow conference and division playoff hopefuls, it needs Gregory on the field generating a pass rush.
