As seen in this interview with NFL Network's Rich Eisen, Owens revealed he had his agent reach out to the Dallas Cowboys about a return to the team after superstar pass-catcher Dez Bryant broke his foot last week:
While Owens' three-year tenure in Dallas was productive, as he topped 1,000 receiving yards in each season from 2006 to 2008 and caught a total of 38 touchdown passes, he rubbed many people the wrong way. That included squabbles with quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten and then-offensive coordinator and current head coach Jason Garrett.
Even so, Owens believes he could be helpful to the Cowboys if everyone involved is willing to forget the past, as he told Eisen (h/t Bob Hille of Sporting News):
We all know what happened when I was there, and there were some things said where it may have fractured the relationship between myself and Witten and Romo. You know, time has passed, and hopefully they know that I've moved on beyond that, and maybe hopefully they have. But for me, it's all about giving myself an opportunity. That's all I ever really wanted.
There is no question Owens is one of the greatest receivers in NFL history, but his issues with the Cowboys coupled with the fact that he hasn't played in five years makes it extremely unlikely Jerry Jones would consider bringing him back.
One person who believes it would be a good move for everyone involved, though, is Utah Jazz forward Trevor Booker:
T.O. has been back in the news lately since he is one of 108 nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2016.
Owens is sixth on the all-time receptions list (1,078), second in receiving yardage (15,934) and third in receiving touchdowns (153). With production like that, T.O. is a virtual lock to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the very near future.
He is such an impressive physical specimen that he likely he could still contribute to some degree in the NFL, but he doesn't have much left to prove either.
At this point, he is probably best off riding into the sunset and letting go of his issues with the Cowboys rather than trying to mend potentially irreparable fences.
