Tony Romo appeared to injure his ribs in the first half of the Dallas Cowboys game against the New York Giants.

SportsCenter described the injury on Twitter:

Concern in Dallas: Tony Romo leaves game after being sandwiched between two New York pass-rushers. Kyle Orton takes over for Cowboys.

After right tackle Doug Free was knocked over on a pass play, three defensive players converged on Romo right as he was getting rid of the ball. The pass was incomplete, but the more concerning part was how the quarterback struggled to get up afterwards.

He walked off the field on his own power, but Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1 points out that he was uncomfortable:

Romo wincing while he walks.

Fortunately, Tom Rock of Newsday reported that the injury was not serious:

Tony Romo had the wind knocked out of him. He is expected to return.

Veteran Kyle Orton came in for one play and handed the ball off to DeMarco Murray in what ended up being the last offensive play of the half for the Cowboys.

Before the injury, Dallas led their division rival 13-10 due to some solid play from their starting quarterback. He completed 25 of his 33 passes for 188 yards while mostly moving down the field on short passes.

He also added a touchdown to Jason Witten to make up for an earlier touchdown.

While Orton is a capable backup, the Cowboys' hopes this season are heavily tied to Romo. He is coming off a season where he had a career high of 4,903 passing yards to go with 20 touchdowns.

The team only managed to finish 8-8 last season while finishing third in a difficult NFC East, but expectations remain high.

Without Romo, however, Dallas will have a hard time competing this season.
