I know 2014 is still in play. And I have high hopes. But the window is now!

I'm not certain if Brady was at the end of his contract, but...

Is there a way to rework Romo so he takes less and it benefits the team coming into 2015. I said this in another thread, but I believe if this team made some bold moves with the cap, and perhaps franchised Murray, pay Dez and RoMc, and retain Free - along with drafting a DT and DE, they could have a top ten defense, and perhaps top five.

This comes down to money. Because the pieces are in place. I once thought the defense was far off, but am now thinking it needs a pass rush to get the QB off his spot and disrupt the timing of the other guy's passing offense.

Romo is aging. He is playing better than he ever has.

Murray is making a huge difference.

RoMc at the Mike with Lee at the Will and Hitchens at the Sam, or whatever, will be formidable. This defense just needs a little more push at the front four.

This could be 92 and 93 with the right moves.

All in for Six and Seven.

Umm, he got a raise

With Brady and his wife's combined incomes past-present-future, it is not inconceivable that Brady could buy an NFL team. Or at least be the major shareholder. I think Carolina's Richardson is the only owner to have also played in the NFL. Bon Jovi couldn't come up with the cash to buy a team.

I think Staubach probably could have bought a team had he wanted. I heard he is worth something like $600M due to business deals.

I wonder if the Mannings combined (father and sons) could come up with the money to buy a team. I think they might be able to come close to being the principle owners with a little help.

Given that he and his wife have careers that aren't good on longer term prospects, buying a team would be a monumentally stupid move. You need other income sources. Teams make some money for the owners, but it is a luxury investment for folks who have long-term resources.

When a thread title is untrue, do the mods fix it?

It sounds good as a fan and granted, its not sports but in the real world no one is taking a pay cut to see their company do better. I don't expect a team friendly deal and with all they have done for us? I don't mind them getting a solid contract.

And i'd hardly consider a 54 million dollar signing bonus taking less than market value. I think what it really comes down to is the guaranteed money they get.

Romo took 17m a year when other top QBs are getting 20m+. It was 25m signing bonus and 55m guaranteed.

His guarantees run out after next season, so that's 38m that has already been accounted for and 17m for 2015.

Regardless. It isn't a pay cut as the thread title says

It is if he made more last year.

Everyone said he would never play for the 3 yr 24m extension when he signed it, but now that he is, no one gives him any credit for giving up salary.

If Romo takes a deal like Brady it does not help Dallas go all in for 2015. It won't clear up any cap space for 2015.

Romo just needs to restructure for 2015 to save 10m+ against the cap and that was the plan all along.

But if he did re-do his deal it would save the team money against the cap in 2015.

.

Not all contracts are designed to go up every successive year. Getting paid more last year is not and indication of taking a pay cut just like getting paid less last year is not an indication of a pay raise. If you look at Brady's base salary only then he is getting a significant pay raise. He got $2 million in base salary this season and is scheduled to make $8 million next season. That, too does not tell the whole story.

That would still be different than the type of deal Brady just struck, which does not change the Pats cap at all this season.

Evaluating Brady's deal has to include the 3 year/27m extension he signed in Feb of 2013 that goes into effect this year. Brady went from making 15m a year to 8-9m a year. That is not a raise, it is a substantial give back for a top QB.

New England has always gotten a fairly good price for Brady. It's been a very unique and mutually beneficial situation for sure.
I think he has already had 4 contracts (not including restructures) since his rookie deal while Romo has had 2.

I think Romo is only the 8th highest paid QB on average. It's just that Brady's deals are even a better value.

Most of you people don't read the entire thread. You read the OP and then comment. I have been told off quite a few times in this thread that he did not take a pay cut. I posted on page two an update, which detailed the fact that Brady was not the point.

I guess you fol;ks still harping on Brady didn't get the updated notes.

This is about the window of opportunity this team - Dallas, because if i don't indicate that, some of you will be off and running with this being about New England - and Dallas having the potential of making a run over a couple of years if Dallas pushes all in.

As stated, I believe with the linebacker corp which will be fielded next year, this team is not that far away. A good DE and DT and perhaps a safety and Dallas could leap into the top ten and maybe the top five in defense.

I am not abandoning this season at all. But there are signs this team, in this configuration, can play hard-nosed football.

The intent of the thread was not about Brady, but about restructuring a few guys to get the money to make this happen.

But what is truly confounding is all you people that wanted to correct the title of the thread - which was taken from the article - instead of commenting on the lion share of the OP - which clearly is about getting money to make a steady run over several years.

Perhaps I should start a thread about Lee coming back and actually contributing to this team and title it Van Gogh - Too Much Paint On Canvass. Since most of you have ADD it would appear.

How is that? The value of an NFL team is going to rise in my opinion. I thought read where the Cowboys made something like $300M profit last year on $560M revenue. That ain't no luxury investment. The Cowboys are worth $3.2B. The Bills just sold for $1.2B. The Bills owner could easily sell the team tomorrow to a group in LA for double.

You didn't mention going back to that extension signed 2013 before and what you said still doesn't add up. His base salary will now be much higher than it was the past few seasons. He wasn't making $15 million a year unless you count his signing bonus, which still applies now.

He was coming off a 5yr/78m deal he signed in 2010 and is now on a 3 yr/27m deal. That's 15m to 9m any way you pay it.

The point to the thread is to get there by any means necessary.

The time is now. Phillips-head Brady to a plank.

This team may be there now, but the correct moves, being bold, taking a risk, it could produce something astounding.

Sorry, perhaps I should have left the Brady article out of this.

Not really, my friend, as it means team...and even if sums are there with Brady, the direction for the cap was made better.

And cap direction completely fits what and where you headed...but the Cowboy's own back door.

Just along the defensive line, and where focus will be headed steamily and storm intense, a good discussion on the defensive line.

Who stays...who goes...and who is added?

From the start in my mind:

Anthony Spencer - retain
Jeremy Mincer - retain
Demarcus Lawrence - retain
George Selvie - retain
Ben Gardner - retain

Tyrone Crawford - retain
Josh Brent - retain
Ken Bishop - retain
Davon Coleman - retain

To this fan, a valid defensive tackle and defensive end would be on the agenda to be added. Myself, first and second round of the upcoming draft.

The links I shared clearly show his base salary goes way up and that his cap hit goes up a little. The only way he makes less from the Patriots is if/when they cut him. If he plays he is getting paid as much as he was before.

That's just not correct. The 30m signing bonus he got in 2013 covered 2013 and 2014. Added to his base salaries of 1m and 2m he made 33m for those 2 years or 16.5m a year.

He is now scheduled to make 27m over the next 3 years or 9m a year. It isn't that complicated.
