Quinn's night
Sunday, August 26, 2007
BY BILL SNIER

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn hit Joshua Cribbs at a perfect spot on the left sideline, and he caught the ball and ran 20 yards for a touchdown.

The rookie was a stunner a second straight Saturday.

After Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson got two full series, the rookie hit the field with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.

A dink pass and Jason Wright's run yielded a quick first down. Fancy footwork on a reverse pivot allowed Quinn to find running back Jerome Harrison open for a 17-yard catch and run.

On second and 11, Kellen Winslow made a spectacular 24-yard catch over the middle. It wouldn't have happened without a QB who has enough arm and a lot of guts.

Quinn's intriguing series ended with a near-touchdown on the left edge of the end zone. The ball traveled 45 yards into Joe Jurevicius' hands, but the veteran wideout couldn't quite keep both feet in - although Jurevicius campaigned for a review.

Unfazed, Quinn engineered a 37-yard touchdown drive late in the third quarter after David McMillan recovered a fumble.

The Browns led 17-10. Quinn was 7-of-8 for 81 yards at that point.

He came back to Earth on the next two series, both three-and-outs.

Looked professional AGAIN....against the Broncos first team(there goes the 'against the scrubs' excuse). Threw some veteran passes in there too.

Getting close to moving to #2 on the depth chart, if not there already.

Frye played well, Anderson's numbers looked good, but was sacked 3 times(Browns version of Bledsoe).

Quinn does look very crisp and accurate I must say. Right now I think he's just going out and playing very free without much pressure on him. He has to prove himself in the regular season.

Now there's a revelation. What rookie doesn't?

To say he hasn't much pressure is a bit naive IMO.

The pass to Jurevicius looked like it was a TD on replay, and it was a heckuva pass either way.

There's going to be a lot of pressure from Cleveland fans to start Quinn right away, but they begin the season against some pretty tough defenses before a bye week in week seven (I think). Crennel might wait until week eight to start him... Frye and Anderson might look pretty dismal by that point, and it'll give Brady two weeks to prepare for his first start. With the burgeoning swell of fan support to start Brady sooner than later, Crennel is going to be in a tight position for the next while.

We should expect Quinn to play well. Assuming our personel guys know what they're doing, they had Brady Quinn ranked in the top 10 of players in the draft. Just because he ends up being a good starter, if he does, has nothing to do with it being a good trade for us or not. If Romo is our starter for the next 5-6 years, then drafting and paying Quinn would have been very foolish...we couldn't turn down that Browns' #1 next year.

Even very good rookie QB's still struggle. Look at Vince Young last year...he was not at all consistent. He made a handful of great plays in close games that turned losses into wins; otherwise, no one would have been impressed at all. I'm giving him credit for making those plays, mostly with his legs, but we've all seen that before. Until he actually has a very good year passing, he's not a proven QB. Quinn will struggle in the season, like any rookie.

If this season is a disaster, Brian Brohm will be in the draft next year, but I think Romo will be fine. I'm much more worried about our o-line playing consistant and getting pressure on the QB.

Who cares!!! He's seen nothing yet. Teams will blitz him to death this year and they should, he's a rookie....

Romo probably wont be our starter for the next 5-6 years. The clock is getting ready to strike midnight.

Quinn may a franchise QB and in the Pro-bowl in the next 5-6 years while we continue to cycle through want-to-be QBs.

If all things equal and we had to chose romo or quinn for the future, we made the wrong choice. However, you have to factor in the draft pick next year and how well spencer performs before you say the decision was wrong.

Alot of people agree with you, you just dont hear them because they dont have the energy to wait out the bannings and suspensions on the message boards for giving accurate assessments of Romo's talent.

In my opinion, and i've said all along, Brady Quinn is going to be a really good Quarterback. Its just not going to be this year.

When he gets into regular season play hes going to struggle. I think he'll struggle pretty mightily too.

But in the long run I do think he will be a very good QB and yes even better than Jemarcus Russel.

Oh please - people now get banned because they dislike Romo?
