He needs to take a pay cut.

At 10 million he is the 2nd paid corner in the league. I'm stunned to see this. He definitely should be asked to take a pay cut.

it was structured that way, to allow the team cap flexibility to restructure and extend or cut him if he didn't work out and save cap space

And remember he wasn't the first choice - Nnamdi Asomugha was the year before but the Cowboys got outbid by the Eagles.

Add Claiborne's lack of production over the past two years and it sure doesn't make you feel good about the front-office's ability to evaluate / scout the CB position.

The reason Dallas can't do that is that they can't save anything by cutting him.

They didn't restructure him this year, however, so that if his play isn't good, it will be easier for them to cut him after next season, if I'm not mistaken.

You can make him a june 1st cut and save 7 million this year.

Right, but then who do you replace him with...BW Webb? Now that they are substantially under the cap, you can hold on to him and it becomes much easier to release him in the future.

I'm a firm believer that if you have a strong pass rush, your secondary will largely take care of itself. Spend that money on the defensive line.

He won't be after FA is done.

This and when he was signed it was smart. He is a man cover CB. Not zone. He was brought I to play man in a 34. He is not a zone cb. Not his fault Jerry was stupid to switch scheme after signing a man cover cb and trading up for another man cover cb.

His average salary is 10 million a year, you can't not consider his signing bonus.
Your initial post is misleading. The cost to keep him is 7.5M in additional money over what he was paid in previous years.

For me, .. he was worth every nickel when he picked that Ben Rothleisberger pass in OT to beat the Steelers. Best Cowboys moment for me in quite a long time.

A moment offset by his play against the Lions...

He should not be the 2nd highest paid corner in the league... He needs a significant pay cut request as well.
