Shawn Oakman – DE – Baylor

Oakman is a fifth-year senior and two-year starter for Baylor. He originally enrolled at Penn State in 2011 and was redshirted that year. He then transferred to Baylor and had to sit out the 2012 season as a transfer. He was a backup in 2013 and recorded 33 total tackles and 2.0 sacks. He became a starter in 2014 and had his best season as a college player, recording 51 total tackles, 11 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. This past season as a starter he recorded 43 total tackles, 4.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. Oakman usually lines up at right defensive end and plays in a rotation.

Size –

6070 – 275 – 4.78 (all estimates)

Strong Points –

Height and length, had a productive 2014 season. Flashes some pass rush talent. Has a burst.

Weak Points –

Plays tall, is tight in the knees and hips. Is not a natural bender. Lacks top instincts and is slow to react and find the ball. Lacks good hand use and is slow to shed. Does not protect his legs and gets cut far too often. Don’t see a consistent competitive toughness. Played like he was protecting himself in 2015. Does not make anywhere near the number of plays he should.

Summation –

One of the most disappointing players I have done this year. Has a lot of hype, but his playdoes not match the hype. Has good initial quickness but gets tall out of his stance. Not a natural bender and has tightness in his hips.

I've seen oakman play a lot and he doesn't impress me in the least. I wouldn't draft him even in the very late rounds.

Even in the late rounds? Hyperbole much? Oakman is never going to be an elite edge rusher. He is a chase down defender and versatile and explosive athlete. He needs to go somewhere he can continue to rotate and play both sides of the line. He is not a first or even a second round talent, but in that 3-5th round range he would be a great pick. Anything later he is an absolute steal.

NT Andrew Billings impressed much more than Oakman. Every time I watch them play, Billings is playing balls out and bulldozing people, reminds me of what Larry Allen would look like playing NT, guy is so powerful. If Oakman had Billing's motor and nastiness he would a top 5 pick.

Why waste a pick? If you want a Baylor guy Billings is really good

If he were lining up against a cashier at Pollock Commons he would be worthy of the #1 overall pick.

We already have an Oakman on the roster, but with much better football I.Q. and technique in the form of Irving.

Any GM that falls in love with Oakman's measurables and drafts him in the first 2 rounds is going to be sorely disappointed.

I would take a flyer on Oakman with one of our comp picks.

Give him to Rod to see if he could spark something inside Shawn. If not, only wasted a late pick on a boom/bust guy.

Oakman tries to get by on his physical tools vs. putting the work in to get better on the field. Those are the kinds of guys that you draft on the third day, but not in the top three rounds.

Now Spence is an interesting guy to me. He's made bad choices and got caught up and hooked on ecstasy. He went to rehab, got cleaned up and has been stellar ever since. He's not a bad kid, has a solid GPA, doesn't have run-ins with the law, etc. While I'll leave it to the teams to decide, I think his best days might be ahead of him as he's already experienced the gutter and knows that he can't have a repeat of past behavior or he'll lose everything.

Remember Danielle Hunter?. He has 6 sacks playing part time and we were interested in him.I think Spence is better but I bet he is off our board.

I liked him alot. Raw pass rusher, but a combination of elite athleticism, very very high motor and coachability means you are very likely to develop as a pass rusher

I'd take a late round flyer on him and nothing more. Shilique Calhoun of Michigan State has been much more productive than Spence or Oakman. Not even CLOSE. Look at the stats and most importantly, look at the film.

Oakman looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Still looks like a Photoshop

I too have watched him play at Baylor and I think he is a solid 2nd-round prospect. He reminds me of Ed "Too Tall" Jones; he will never love playing football but he will be very good as a LDE.

It's not a wasted pick in my opinions. In the mid to late rounds he is better than just about anything else that is going to be out there. He will likely never be elite, but he will be a solid contributor.

I'm not a Baylor fan. Im not just looking to add a Bear Cub to the team.
