One more thing to consider is that Couglin's contract is up after this season and he's almost 70. Gruden seems to be in a perpetual hot seat in Washington and Danny you would assume would be all over this. I'd hate it if Payton wound up at either one of these places and we'd have to face him twice a season for the next 10 years or so....

This should not be an issue. My memory is not very good on the Giants but Payton was part of the Giants staff many years ago and fell out of favor or was demoted. Parcells brought him to his staff in Dallas afterwards. Jerry and Sean are very close and I think the reason Jerry clings on the JG for so many years is that he does not want to lose the next "Sean Payton". This is a no-brainer for Jerry. The biggest concerns would be eating JG's Contract and the compensation for bringing Payton to Dallas since Payton is still under contract. I personally do not like trading Draft Picks for a Head Coach.

When the story originally broke, it was reported that the Saints would allow Payton to explore his options w/o the new team having to give anything up in terms of compensation. They seem to be denying this now, which makes sense. I agree that's a big hurdle and you can bet it's going to cost a lot. I want Payton, but if it's going to cost a couple of firsts, then he can go somewhere else. There is still the "change of control" cause that's written into his contract that would basically make him a free agent.
