2. Having the mental debate on which defensive end has been better in camp thus far: DeMarcus Lawrence or Randy Gregory? I have not been surprised by what I have seen from Lawrence, but it appears that the learning curve for Gregory is very small .

3. At this point I am going with nine defensive backs on this 53-man roster. Normally I would keep 10, but I have a feeling that I am going to need that spot in another area. The fact that Byron Jones and Corey White can help me at safety allows me to think this way.

4. There is no question that this is the best camp that Gavin Escobar has had since he joined the club. I would chalk this up to the development of more physical toughness in his game.

Didn't know Swaim was struggling as a blocker. If he can't block, bye-bye.

More than anything else, I love the mentality this team has taken on. The mental toughness. The attention to detail. The desire to win, now. I was among the most vocal Garrett haters before last season, but count me as a fan now. This team has taken on his identity when it didn't have one. It trickles all the way down to the guys who know they're nothing more than camp fodder. It's even seeped into the local media it seems. I am still cautious, but quite optimistic for the future of this team.

good stuff by broaddus there.
i concur on most all of it.

swaim is probably the best low cost developmental te they've added in a while but he's well behind the top 3. probably a PS guy tho he could sneak through final cuts before later moves push him to PS.

gardner is interesting. pretty low on the totem pole but you know they don't wanna give up on him.

gibson has been worse than most realize or admit but there is some upside there. getting a lot of attention from columbo is a good sign. means they haven't given up on him.

9 DBs, 6 CB, 3 S seem a foregone conclusion to me. unless they really need the ST spot with McCray or someone gets hurt this is it.

i keep vaughn and take advantage of the inactive but dressed 3rd qb spot. showers doesn't really help there as a ST guy because he eats a game day spot same as danny mccray would.

showers is a PS guy hopefully and maybe next year you make a move with weeden or vaughn.

His blocking was good in the SD game and in college.

His blocking only seems to be a problem according to 1 person.

I didn't think he was a very good blocker at UT but that OL was in a constant state or upheaval.
He was flat destroyed by some mediocre BYU defenders.

The Cowboys have reportedly been very pleased with his receiving skills but underwhelmed with his blocking.
Agreed that Broaddus is the only report we are hearing but no one else is questioning that report or offering a rebuttal amongst the beat writers.

Hanna is a very underrated blocker now. He simply cant catch or run routes worth crud.
So Swaim probably has to out-block Hanna and may be why Broaddus sees the blocking in question.

Good stuff. My quick takes: Broaddus was just wrong on Gregory's abilities coming out of college. The guy could play then, and he's showing it in his first camp.

Similarly with Escobar. I don't doubt he's gotten a lot better as a blocker, but much of his impact this camp has been his work catching the ball, at least what I've heard, anyway. He's always done that really well. It's just been a matter of getting the opportunities. He's got the potential to be a break out player for us this season, really. Between him and Beasley and a possible featured screen game, we have the potential to just put a ton of pressure on defenses this season.

Re: Swaim, I'm also going to wait to hear he's had blocking issues from somebody else. It's more likely the case that any rookie TE is going to have adjustments at the pro level, and this guy has shown better hands than expected. Everything I've heard about the player from other sources has been universally fairly positive.

Washington lost two TEs already and another is injured. Swaim had a good game against SD. I don't see any way Swaim makes it to the PS. Washington would be all over him. And I don't think the Cowboys would would want to lose him especially since this is possibly Hanna's last year and they traded up to get him.

I would be leary of trying to put Showers on the PS if he keeps playing as well or better as he did vs SD . QBs that can play special teams would be enticing to many teams. And he would be very valuable running the scout team for teams preparing for mobile QBs like SF and SEA.

Both make the 53 if their play continues to improve.

Can't really keep an extra TE and an extra QB
Honestly I don't think we keep either
If swain gets picked up that's life, move on

There is not an inactive dressed QB spot anymore. That has been gone since 2011.

Well, it may come down to Swaim vs. Clutts. I'd give the nod to Swaim in that situation.

It may come down to Showers vs. Vaughn for 3rd QB. Too early to tell on that one so far.

We will have a more clear picture after Sunday's game vs SF. We will probably see a a lot of action from Swaim, Showers, and Vaughn.

Agree on Swaim.

Other teams are unlikely to claim Showers. Any of them could have signed him a couple of months ago. He will need to something spectular to make the 53.

FYI, you're leery. Leary is the player.

That might be special teams.

I don't know, he is growing on me and he would be a good PS QB. I could see him mimicking a mobile QB like Wilson with no problem.

i think the staff values clutts lots more than a 4th TE who might not even be active on game day
I suspect swain ends up on ps
Everyone always says guys won't clear waivers but in reality the vast majority do

teams are desperate for good TEs,if they think Swain can play then they should keep him because Hanna wont be here next here.

edit-somebody before me made the exact same point.
