Broaddus: 12 Thoughts From The Preseason Loss to Denver

  • When the Cowboys offensive line studies this tape, they are going to find that they were nowhere near as physical as the Broncos and the quarterbacks and running backs paid the price for those struggles. The protection was too inconsistent across the board and the holes in the running game were nonexistent. It was a bad night all around.
  • It was a big night for Kenneth Boatright and his effort to land that backup defensive end spot on this roster. These defensive coaches put a lot on his plate and he responded well.
  • I had John Wetzel making this team as the last offensive linemen, but this is two weeks where he hasn't played well enough to make me part ways with Darrion Weems.
  • Feel bad for Ryan Williams not being able to play in this contest. There is a side of me that believed that he would have been able to build on that momentum from last week. His tape and practices have been good enough to make this roster and any other season he might, but the numbers are most likely going to catch up with him.
  • I am still not sold on having a fullback on this roster if it’s Tyler Clutts. There were snaps where he went low on a block in the hole and tried to cut. Then the next play he loses sustain on the edge. This offense doesn't need a 50-50 blocker at that position.
My press box eye had Jemea Thomas around the ball in the fourth quarter. I am looking forward to seeing how he played in other snaps and special teams. His ability to play safety and corner might save this club a roster spot.

Can't say I disagree with any of his takes. Especially the part about Boatright and the Cowboys working the waver wire as a 2nd draft.

To me, fullback is finally a dinosaur for this season. I wouldn't give a second thought now, as to the possible use of Tanner in the role.

I think Parnell earned his game day status again...

This roster is far from set on its final 53, and I would not be one bit surprised to see Jerry and Stephen Jones, along with Will McClay, work this waiver wire and the phones in an attempt to make the depth on this club better. Not just on the defense but in all areas. This club will look at this as a second draft and they need to take advantage of every move they can make

Translation: Much like we have been reading since camp started, talent is thin, particularly on defense.

I would really like to keep 4 RBs, no FB, and 6 WRs. Byrd should make the team. I don't care about numbers. Some of these bottom defensive guys shouldn't even be given a spot. No way I am cutting Byrd for one of them. You have to think two years down the road.

And Williams should definitely make the team.

No, that is not an in other words...that is your own statement. But dumbed down to insult the reading abilities of anyone who just read and left alone the possibilities between lines...to be someone else's deep, dark, secrets.

MLB McClain looked pretty good tonight. Good pursuit, good drops in coverage and was aggressive and physical at the point of attack.

Wetzel is terrible and needs to bounce. Terrible footwork. Poor balance and lacks punch and ability to anchor.

Not impressed with Weeden - this is the guy that CL let walk. Not thrilled.

Hannah is overlooked by fans - he is a dirty work guy - blocks, plays ST's and has decent hands in the pass game. He reminds me of Harris - does all of the little things. Competitive.

One more week!!!

Nice to hear about the two young guys at DT. If there was anything that gave me some hope about the future of the defense is the play of Bishop and Coleman. By this time next year, I think the Cowboys will have two decent DT's.

Broaddus lost me when he said he had Wetzel making the team. I had him since day 1 as a PS guy.

Broaddus comments are right on....don't always agree with him but do here.

Williams biggest problem is he can't seem to stay healthy...what good is he if always hurt?

Wetzel played decently the first two games but was not very good against the Dolphins and was horrible last night. He is definitely only a RT...PS at best.

I do think LaRon Byrd should stay. He has consistently been in the mix.

I think we should go with 8 OL and try to keep 2-3 on the PS in case of emergency. No one else warrants being kept. Weems maybe but he hasn't played at all and not sure what the status of his health is.

Clutts is a jag, but I am not convinced that our running game doesn't need a FB.

Coleman played very well last night and Boatright had his moments. Coleman is a lock and I would keep Boatright for now.

I was surprised the OL seemed unable to open holes against Denver with any consistency worth mentioning. The talent appears to be sufficient to get the job done but the rhythm simply isn't there yet. I think we'll likely see some rough sledding, perhaps in the first six games or so. We could definitely use another backup RT for the offensive line. It'd be great to locate a useful talent within the ranks of the final cuts but that's undoubtedly asking a lot. I'd really hate to see Free get injured and have to depend on what we have in terms of our backups. Martin has talent but like any rookie, needs more time to develop his game.

Some of our rookie d-linemen show promise but still require development. Realistically, it could easily be around midseason or so before the defensive line is capable of mounting a decent passrush. Getting DeMarcus Lawrence back should help. The gap integrity of the DL has been extremely suspect throughout camp and the preseason games but that's totally understandable with the number of players that have been held out of practice and the preseason games. Assuming they're able to return to proper health, their added strength and conditioning should help them fend off blocks from opposing linemen. At any rate, it'll take time.

Cut Randle and keep Williams.

If we need an RB that can play special teams then we can simply pick up Phillip Tanner anytime we want.

If we cut Ryan Williams I might quit. I know it seems stupid to carry 4 RB's but when the top two are injury prone and the guy is ballin you keep 4.

or cut JR.

This off season, the first unit has scored a total of 13 points. I'm not really surprised when the lower team players become involved.

Stephen even admitted this fact as well.

I'm not sure how anyone can think otherwise.

This is the CZ. Even if the sky is clearly blue there are several in here with a "higher IQ" that will tell you it isnt.
