Broaddus on McFadden:

Games Studied: Oakland vs. San Diego, New England, Buffalo (all in 2014)

  • Was an interesting study due to rookie David Carr starting at quarterback. There were plenty of snaps where he faced eight and nine men in the box.

  • Thought in those situations he showed physical toughness and competes. Offensive line did him no favors as well. Snaps where as soon as Carr handed him the ball - he was hit. When he had a chance to get going, he showed initial quickness with acceleration and a burst.

  • Can get the ball to the corner and around. Nice runs against the Chargers and Bills doing just that. Able to make the first man miss then apply a stiff arm to finish the run. Will lower his shoulder and take on the tackler. Showed the vision to make the cut when things opened up. Hard downhill runner on the toss sweep against the Chargers.

  • Really good lateral agility and change of direction. Did not see him drop a ball that was thrown in his direction. Will check down over the ball and make the catch or work to the outside and adjust to the screen. Was able to adjust to a ball that was high from Carr. Gathered it in and worked up the field.

  • Will follow his blockers. Can make the cuts, needs to keep his feet better on contact in the open field. Couple of snaps where if he could have kept his balance, he would have had a larger gain.

  • Aware to help on blitz, sees defense and adjusts. Steps up and stays square to handle his man. Stays on feet to work rusher to the outside. Keeps his feet moving on contact. Did cut block one time but that was after a play fake to the outside. Will cut block some on the edge.

  • Will protect the ball when he runs inside. Runs better on the edge than he does inside.

  • His running style is more elusive than Murray's. Split time with several backs during the games I studied but has some three down traits.

  • Was really surprised of his willingness, technique and finish as a pass blocker.

I heard Broaddus on the radio. He had a surprisingly optimistic review. I did like hearing that is blitz pickup is good.
I'm sure McFadden is excited to finally to get play in areal offense with pretty much the whole package of dominant line, very good or great QB, and threatening receivers.
Assuming we also draft a RB, it could be real interesting.

Ya i really wanted McFadden in the draft that year he came out. I think of he stays healthy could be a good piece to our offense.

Still want to draft a top RB this year though

He grew up a Cowboys fan and was praying he would end up here. Now he finally had his chance. I hope he turns this into something great. I'm a huge Darren fan so I hope this works out well.

Watched some of his Youtube videos today. Really like how his holds the ball high and tight. Lost 1 fumble last yr in 155 carry and 36 catches. Not bad (Murray 392 rushes + 57 catches....lost 5 fumbles).

In these 4 (maybe only 3, if they watched 2 SD) games they reviewed, McFadden had 49 attempts for 214 yards and 0 TDs. In one game against SD, he had 8 carries for 21 yards.

He's a decent cheap gamble. If he doesn't work out nothing major lost. He probably still has some of the talent that made him a high draft pick, and hopefully in a better situation he reclaims some of it.

I love this pick up and really believe he will shock people. If McFadden happens to have a good season(1200+ yrds), It will just solidify what we already know ab our OL. And will also bridge the gap for a rookie RB. Great job SJ!

Look at that team he's on. No RB would be that good on that squad .

The one and only time he ever got more than 1000 yards was 5 years ago. That ship has sailed.

That's BS. There are plenty of backs in the league who produce with suspect offensive lines. MJD did it for years in Jax.

Murray lead the NFL in yards before contact. If McFadden gets those types of holes he taking it to the house. Wouldn't be surprised if he averages 5ypc behind our line.

And boy do I hope you're right because from everything I see, that's what he needs.

He's like a Chris Johnson, with the straight line speed to run away from a defense, but, like Johnson, none of the shiftiness or power to do much else.

Are we being honest with ourselves?

It's not like every Raiders RB the last 3 years struggled quite as much as Jennings at least in terms ypc:
  • In 2014 Latavius Murray (5.2 ypc) averaged nearly 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.4 ypc)
  • In 2013 Rashard Jennings rushed for twice as many yards and 1.2 yards more per carry (4.5 vs 3.3)
  • In 2012 Marcel Reese (4.6 ypc) and Mike Goodson (6.3 ypc) collectively average 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.3 ypc)
One can only conclude that McFadden himself shares a lot of the responsibility for his 3.3 ypc average over the last 3 years.

He has missed 29 games in his career. Not a good track record in that dept. Avg missing 4 games a year.

IMHO the team was never going to shell out big money for Murray from the beginning. The MB3 contract haunted this organization for years and crippled their ability to participate in FA years ago. It was a painful lesson learned that made them stick to their guns this time around.

Murray was in a perfect storm of circumstances, where he reached the end of his deal, the OL was built to protect Tony Romo and to emphasize the running game. Both Murray and the Cowboys took full advantage as he rushed for the organization's record books and the Cowboys benefitted from winning games and beating the competition 12 times and once in the playoffs. It was an amazing year to be a Cowboys fan and watch it all play out but that one a one of kind season when you sit and think about it. Even if Murray returned, he wasn't going to repeat that 1800+ yd performance, those are the facts.

This new pick-up with McFadden is just an option for the team to evaluate in spring OTAs as they figure out how they are going to tote the rock effectively this upcoming season. Again IMHO, it seems like they are going to use a RB by committee approach much like they did back in 2009 with MB3, Felix, and Tashard. McFadden is not here to replace Murray's 1800 yds, but rather it's going to be a combination of all RBs involved to include a rookie RB if one becomes available during the draft that they want to use a pick for.

There is not going to be a single RB on this roster that is going to break the new record this season. I don't anticipate this happening again unless we find a special talent at RB that will become a feature back like Murray was. The committee approach won't even guarantee a combined production of 1800+ yds but as long as the OL dominates the LOS we will win games.

The point is that the Cowboys signed a guy that is your current 3rd down back because he has experience and he's more than capable of blitz pickup, which is what I said they are looking for yesterday. He's getting paid peanuts at 900K base, with a 200K signing bonus. There is an incentive of $2.85M if he rushes back to back years for 1600+ yds. Otherwise the contract is valued at $3M for 2 yrs.

Wouldn't mind having Latavious Murray here!

This is a classic case of a player rotting away on a bad team.

He's gonna shock the world. You watch.

His 140 more touches than Murray is nothing. Can't believe most say he's washed up and broken while Murray is in his prime.

That 6 month age difference between the two is nothing.

Murray was driven into the ground last year with almost 500 touches. I guarantee that will affect him this year.
