2) I am starting to enjoy the Greg Hardy battles with Zack Martin as much as I am the ones with Tyron Smith. There are now snaps where we see them together in one-on-one as well as the blitz period, which presents a unique challenge for the young guard. What is evident when you watch these matchups is that Martin realizes that he must get to Hardy quickly before he has time to make his rush. The longer you wait on Hardy, the more dangerous he is.

3) It was a better day for Cole Beasley releasing off the line in the one-on-one drills and that carried over into the team periods. If you watched our Training Camp Live segment from Saturday, you would have seen Beasley struggling with the corners that were playing him off the line. Where Beasley is at his best is in his ability to operate in space and work into his routes. He was able to create more of that on Sunday.

4) In an interesting move, the coaching staff has rookie quarterback Jameill Showers lining up at some key spots on special teams. Showers was getting work as the personal protector on the punt team, L2 on the kick off team and offreturn man as a blocker on the kickoff return. To his credit he has looked comfortable at all the spots.

10) It's been back-to-back practices where Davon Coleman has shown up. Before camp I questioned his desire to be the type of player I observed in college and portions of last season, but it appears that the light has come on. Coleman has been powerful and difficult to handle -- against both the run and pass. There has been more praise in his play from Rod Marinelli, and in talking to some scouts, they have noticed a change as well.

It would be a god send if he turned into a nice rotation piece.

8) Starting to have some concerns about J.J. Wilcox and his ability to cover without holding his man. There have been several snaps where Wilcox is battling his man down the field and you notice him grabbing cloth in an attempt to position himself in coverage. If it continues to be a problem, there are other options with guys like Corey White and Byron Jones to play in coverage situations.

Still dont think Wilcox is a FS.

I was just about to post this one. I've long heard about the talent that the young man has, but that he was too much into joking around and not taking things seriously enough. It's nice to hear that he may be realizing the opportunity in front of him.

Devin Street - BUST

It appears that every time I watch Devin Street run a route, he is fighting to get separation and more often than not it’s just not happening. You can see that he is working extremely hard with his technique, but he just hasn't been able to find that space that he needs to operate.

I never liked that pick

The more I think the more I see that we should play Carr, Scandrick, Patmon, Claiborne and White at corner with Jones at free safety, Wilcox at strong and being Church to LB sometimes

yes.

don't try to force guys into positions that aren't right for them.

Welp if thats the case WR is the easiest position to find excess talent. Greenberry, Whitehead and Farmer in camp, plus other teams cuts.

If Whitehead can take ownership of the return gig he will take Harris' old WR spot on the roster. That leaves Street battling with the other guys you mention for the last WR spot. I would not be surprised to see Street on the street.

I liked it because he was polished route runner but evidently he has no suddeness or burst to him either. It showed in games last year it looked like he was running 3/4 speed when everyone else was at full speed.

It was a 5th round pick. Give it a chance.

But yeah, he's got to show in preseason.

Listening to Talking Cowboys it sounded like Coleman and McClain look very good.

Sorry, no mention of the Golden one Nick Hayden.

That's what I'm hoping. McClain was supposed to provided versatility - a 1-tech that can actually pass rush. And Coleman looked really good last year and I was hoping he could become the backup 3-tech. Now that Melton is gone, let's see if Coleman can step up. We still need another 3-tech for the base defense and in case something happens to Crawford.

I really like how the Cowboys are using Byron Jones and Corey White. While pass rush (or lack thereof) occupied most of the Cowboys faithful concerns following the 2014 season, the Cowboys collective inability to stop pass-catching TE's was a close second in my mind. I'm a big fan of the 4-1-6, and I think this will create alot of favorable situations for the Cowboys in downs where the oppositions playbook is wide open.

The perfect storm. Based on early reports, the Cowboys offensive line is picking up where it left off last year, only better. And when you have young guys on the defensive side of the ball, mixed with veterans like Mincey, Tyrone Crawford and Hardy, and throw in a second year player like Demarcus Lawrence, it can accelerate the growth of everyone as a unit. This is crucial for guys like Gregory Hardy's development.

I mentioned in another thread I started that I am expecting big things from the Cowboys receiving unit. Granted, the Cowboys may not have the best collection of talent and take it to the house ability, but what makes this unit special (I think) is their diversity and overall consistency. Certainly, Dez can seemingly do it all, but given the attention he garners, he will never find space like Beasley and Witten do on a regular basis. TWill, if there is anything that separates him from his peers, he does seem to have knack for finding space and Romo's eyes after a play has broken down. We haven't seen much from Street thus far in his pro career, but in college he showed flashes of great run after the catch ability.

If Wilcox loses his job, it will be no secret why, though, given his background as a receiver and running back, it has been somewhat of a surprise. The guy quite simply is a liability in coverage, particularly TE's. With Byron Jones and Corey White, the Cowboys have options that could mean Wilcox riding the pine in obvious passing downs.

Davon Coleman was one of my preseason favorites a year ago. Given the fall from distinction he garnered as the season progressed, I had hoped he would use that as motivation to come back stronger. Glad to see the early indication that could be the case.

I wouldn't put much stock into a report from Broaddus. He has been wrong way more often than he has been correct. Every year at this time we hear from him about players when we can't really see them. Once the preseason games start, what we actually see rarely matches up with what he had reported.

In general, he has expectations for players and then reports that is expectations are true. He probably didn't expect Street to get good separation before TC ever started.

If he ever made a comment in the past about a player, he tends to report that he was indeed correct. When he does change his opinion, he makes a big production about how he was originally correct but the player magically got better.
