Take this to the bank Broadus, Leary is beating out Collins like Marinellinis leaving for Tampa.

Collins only plays at T if Free is hurt. We drafted Green to be the long term answer at RT, lest you think we intentionally throw away 3rd round picks.

  • Take this one to the bank: Ronald Leary is not going to roll over and let La’el Collins have his job. The front office has done an outstanding job of adding talent and head coach Jason Garrett has always been about competition. Well, they have once again created it.
Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin were all “plug and play” guys. Collins is good and a real asset to this team, but let’s not forget what this offense has done with Leary lining up at left guard next to Smith. In the previous two seasons, Cowboys running backs have averaged over six yards a carry off that left side. There is going to be a nice battle there this summer, and if Collins is good enough to take that spot then he will have played his best football, which is all you can ask.
  • You might not believe there is depth at a position like defensive line, but there really is. I like what I have physically seen from Ben Gardner and the possibility of him lining up at left defensive end, but keep a special eye onJack Crawford and what he might bring. With DeMarcus Lawrence the likely starter at that spot, Crawford is going to be given the opportunity to play a major role as a key backup at that spot. Where he really fits is as a first- and second-down defensive end who can move inside and rush from the tackle spot.
Crawford is not a great athlete, and there are times where he will struggle with his bend, but the fact that he can play either end or tackle makes him a very valuable player.

Yep. DT. I'm on it. Underrated and will be a strength.

They didn't know that they would get Collins when they drafted Green. They won't force the positions just because they drafted Green if Collins projects to be significantly better at RT than Green.

They absolutely have to find a quality backup OT. Just look at last season. They would have been doomed without Parnell. If Tony Hills had played, Romo's healthy would have been in jeopardy.

Free had ankle surgery in both Jan 2014 and Jan 2015 and he is now 31 and coming off a season were he missed 7 games including both playoff games. The backup OT position is critical and they don't have any proven players there. At Guard, Bernadeau is the backup and has proven to be a reasonable NFL player that won't get Romo killed.

Broaddus is no doubt a goof, but a broken clock is correct twice per day. If he says enough stuff, eventually he'll be correct on occasion.

I'm no expert but isn't it possible the Cowboy's think a lot more of Green than some of the guy's in here do? I'm thinking they actually want him
Technically yes Leary is in the last year of his deal, but he is a RFA next year, not an UFA like many mistakenly believe. Whichever team has him is not going to let a high quality OG just walk. He's going to get a 2nd Rd tender and I highly doubt any team gives up a 2nd for Leary and a big deal because of the knee. As to your he wont start thing, it is very likely Collins gets a shot at RT next year. With Leary still likely to be here, he could easily be the starting LG next season. Not to mention if Martin, Collins or Free gets hurt he is probably back in the starting lineup.

I'm no expert but isn't it possible the Cowboy's think a lot more of Green than some of the guy's in here do? I'm thinking they actually want him to replace Free at RT and they want Collins to play LG. And If I'm Leary with a degenerative knee, I'm not so sure backup isn't all that unattractive to me. Prolongs my career and perhaps gives me a better shot at walking normally when I did hang it up. Thoughts?

Green may not be on the roster when it is all said and done. Cowboys have a surplus (imagine that) of young talented OL and I would not be surprised if one is packaged in a trade. Cowboys roster is far from set and the Cowboys are known to be notorious wheelers and dealers. Much ado about nothing right now.

I don't see how follow the money relates to your original post.

For any mid round pick, there are only going to be a few teams, if any that valued them in the same round that you did. You would need to find one of those few teams to get back any value from your own draft pick if you trade him when he is still a rookie.

I don't think the surplus is that significant. They normally keep at least 9 and sometimes 10. Green would be #8 the way I see it. They can keep Green and Gibson and even one more if somebody really shows up.

Free and Bernadeau seem to have a very limited amount of time remaining. Leary is an RFA next year, but after that will be difficult to keep unless he remains as the starter and even then the issue with his knee (OCD) always makes his future uncertain.

If Gibson makes the 53, Weems is the only guy in that final group that wouldn't make it to the practice squad.

Tyron
Leary
Fred
Martin
Free

Bernadeau

Collins
Green

Gibson
Weems
Wetzel
R. J. Dill
Reshod Fortenberry
Shane McDermott
Ryan Miller

I think McCray 3 years ago is Spillman today. In Mccrays last season for us he was pretty bad in the special teams department
I think that you have absolutely nothing to base that on.

And Spillman is 2 years older than McCray.

Everything broaddus says should not be taken as a guarantee. Especially when he prefaces it with "this is just a gut feeling".

Leary's in the last year of his contract, and he's got a knee that could end his career any year. He's not going to get a contract extension here. So, he's nothing more than the proverbial progress stopper. Barring injury to Collins, Leary's as good as gone. Either this year or next. Either way, he won't be starting.

A lot of matter of facts in that statement. Collins could come in and be a bust. I hope not and think not but you never know. Leary is a real good player and to make it sound like he is a throw away piece seems silly.

Now your right if Collins comes in and wins the job and at season ends Leary demands too much money then we will move on but Collins could win the job and Leary could resign as a back up and what a great back up he would be.

Lets not you cast away good players
