Ex-scout Bryan Broaddus joined G-Bag Nation on 105.3 FM The Fan last week. Here are some highlights.

On what are the chances Travis Frederick doesn’t start at center:

“I’m one of the most critical guys there is on Phil Costa. But this is a good scheme fit that you want to run the football with DeMarco Murray. Phil Costa can play this scheme. It’s the man scheme he has trouble with, which they’ve been doing a lot the last few seasons. If you do see Phil Costa make this push then all of a sudden do you see Travis Frederick become one these guards. Is he in there with Ronald Leary? Could you have two new starters? I don’t know about that. I think you have one of the guys. But it will be really interesting, we’re out at camp, let’s keep our vision on. How quickly do they start moving Travis Frederick and how quickly does he start getting reps at guard? That will tell you a lot about what they think of Phil Costa.”

On ESPN ranking Tony Romo as the No. 15 quarterback in the NFL:

I am not buying this at all,it would be dumb to select a center in the first
rd who cannot play our scheme.

I am all for playing the best 5 OL-- regardless of where they line up. What is the use of having guys with "position flex" if we get hung up on what position they play?

If Livings/Costa/Frederick is better overall than Livings/Frederick/Bernaudeau-- I have no problem with putting a mauler like Frederick at OG. The bottom line is that both Costa and Frederick have a lot to prove at TC-- it will be great to see who thrives with competition and who wilts.

I agree with this.

Why can't Costa play guard? I want Frederick at C...as far as I am concerned we have a longterm starter there in him.

I've always thought that Costa has gotten the short end of the stick. He was one of those players that was really hurt by the lockout and has had some injury problems. I don't know if he is a long term solution I just don't think we really know everything there is to know about Costa yet.

I really like what Costa does when he's not injured. Would love to see him shake the injury bug and truly see the best 5 on the OL.

I like this, too. Play the best five guys.

I don't know how anyone that spends time watching games, let alone a former scout, can argue with a straight face that "Romo is always in that 10-15" range. Somehow Shaub and Cutler are on the same level according to Broadus. I used to think that it was just that he can't write. Increasingly, I'm becoming concerned that he's just stupid.

Too bad. There are those who could have helped him with his writing.

I'd like to see

Smith Frederick Costa Leary Free

But the best five should start and id be shocked if Livings is out there as a starter.

Too much hand wringing here - no reason why Frederick can't play G and also be a long term solution at C.

Agree. Also, I think Guard would be a little easier for a rookie than Center. Frederick played more snaps at Guard in college than at Center.

Costa can pull and Fredrick block down and destroy a NT all by himself. We could have a stout running game.

Broaddus ranks Romo where? Just another guy who knows nothing about NFL QBs. No wait, he's just a hater;)

If Phil Costa is our starting C, then we have some serious issues.

I honestly think Frederick is a better guard than center. Watching the videos of him when he was at guard and when he was at center, I thought he was a beast at guard and just okay at center.

That's an important point. C is difficult. People look at the Pouncey brothers (esp. the Steeler) and think anyone can just pop in and do a great job. Most rookie centers are going to be unsteady and grade out as mediocre.

Don't be surprised. Broaddus already mentioned that in watching the OTA's, there were things that Costa did better than Frederick. Fact is that Frederick is not a very experienced center. I believe they drafted Frederick because at the spot he was picked he was not only the best C prospect but also the best G prospect.

I agree that may be the case. In the grand scheme, does it really matter whether we add a stud G or a stud C? As long as he is a stud at one of the sports it's irrelevant which one it is. Ultimately, most people think we are going to have to replace the G's and RT too.

I do think Costa is one of our best 5. If need be I would play Costa at Center with TFred at OG this year. I still don't understand why Costa can't play OG.
