Shanahan says WR Kircus' future in doubt after arrest

May 21, 2007
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

DENVER -- Broncos receiver David Kircus, who resumed his NFL career last season after spending a year away from football working in a fast-food shop, was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Kircus got into an argument when he was asked to leave a party early Sunday, hit a man and broke bones in his face, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department said.

Kircus was released on $6,000 bail and ordered to appear in court Tuesday, the sheriff's department said. If convicted, he could be sentenced to two to six years in prison.

His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, and agent, Josh Wright, did not immediately return calls.

Coach Mike Shanahan said the team will await the outcome of the legal process before making any decision on Kircus' status.

"Obviously, if he didn't handle himself the right way, he won't be with us," Shanahan said of the backup receiver and return specialist who joined the team last season.

Kircus had been invited to a party at a home in suburban Centennial, but got into a disagreement with the woman who invited him, authorities said. The man who owned the home was struck in the face after repeatedly asking Kircus to leave, the sheriff's office said.

The man was treated at a hospital, Sheriff Grayson Robinson said. The man's condition and the extent of his injuries were not available and his name was not released.

The 27-year-old Kircus had nine receptions for a team-leading 20.8 yards-per-catch average and returned six punts for a 14.3-yard average last season.

Kircus met with Shanahan on Monday before heading to the sheriff's department to stand in a photo lineup while his teammates participated in passing camp. The coach said what Kircus told him was "a much different story from obviously what came across from the other person."

"Let's wait for the due process to take care of itself and find out if he's guilty or not," Shanahan said. "If he's guilty, then he'll pay the penalty. If not, obviously, he'll be with us."

Kircus is the second Broncos receiver to run afoul of the law this offseason. Brandon Marshall was arrested in March on suspicion of domestic violence.

Anyone realize that Kircus and Tony Romo were the Aikman-Irvin of Eastern Illinois? :D It's true. I had kind of wished the Cowboys could have somehow brought Kircus in here as a backup or something since the two already had an established chemistry. Until now, that is.

It's funny to hear the "tough talk" about players who are a small part of your team.

If this had been Cutler, do you think we would be hearing .. "Obviously, if he didn't handle himself the right way, he won't be with us" .. ??

lolZ, But AJ Nicholson was.....

The Bengals have had how many arrests and the guy they decide to cut is AJ... kinda funny. Espcially since the woman he "hit" is now saying he never did. Oh well I guess they sent a message.... "if you get into off the field trouble you're gone, unless you're a starter."

I think that is why you see people falling in the draft these days. You can afford to take chances with non characters guys when they are backup or scrubbs (ie low draft). You can't afford to do that anymore with high draft chioces.

So, saying would it be the same with Cutler is not exactly apples to apples. With the new commisioner comming down hard on mis-conduct (which I appluad), teams are more and more not going to be taking these buffoons with high draft picks. Teams are only going to be drafting "high character" individuals in the top portion of the draft. They don't want to be put in the position of making this decision with top round draft picks. They just can't afford it.

This is just another thing we all have to love about the Cowboys managment (thank you Jones, Parcells, Ireland). Our team is full of high character guys. The only issues we have seen in the passed years are our bullet magnet, and the alchoholic who we ditched. I think once again, the Cowboys are leading the field in this reguard.

Obviously. I am not sure why that is an issue at all. When you think something is worth the trouble, you obviously will go the extra mile for it. But if its not worth the trouble, why put the effort there?

I know you are kidding, but just saying with so many up and arms about people getting different treatments, always amuses me. As if they treat everyone the same way. One never does, it always depends on what they can get for the trouble they are put through.

Kircus went to Grand Valley State, not Eastern Illinois.
