Joseph Wagoner, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards is giving 100 children a $10,000 scholarship for college. Edwards will give the children their scholarships as long as they keep a 2.5 grade point average, have no unexcused absences in high school and they do at least 15 hours of community service each year.

uh...good luck finding 100 kids who did that lol

Its a good thing that he is doing though. But I do tend to agree with locked&loaded...If I was giving scholarships away it would be for more than average grades.

You have to give the guy credit for doing something beneficial. For those of you finding fault with his requirements look at the Vick thread and then comment. I for one am very impressed with any athlete who gives back to the community.

Try thinking before opening your mouth buddy. That's a C+ to B- average

This is the best thing I've seen a professional athlete do in along time. Kudos to this guy. I will cheer for him, somewhat. I can only cheer for him SO much.. but this is a really classy act. Much, much kudos to him.

*sign* how you going to make fun of students when you don't even know the GPA system... thats like making fun of the Commanders kicking a FG to take the lead when you don't know how the football scoring system is. A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0 so a 2.5 is a C+ Its stated that its the minimum grade standard for the scholarship, which basically tells me that it matters more with the 15hr community service and not missing class then the grades in the school. But still people in High School do under achieve...

I never had an unexcused absence until Senior Skip Day, about a week before graduation... didn't have too awful many excused absences, either...

Let's just say that Mom and Dad were not inclined to go easy on slackers... heck, I even had to put up a fight just to get to go along on Senior Skip Day... :D

The man's put up a million dollars of his own money, to help disadvantaged area kids get a quality education... yes sir, I'll give him credit for doing that... doing this will probably change more than a few lives for the better...

I don't even fault him for some rather lax requirements regarding the GPA, even average students deserve the chance to get a higher education... the brainiacs often have other opportunities they can pursue...

That's based on the incorrect assumption that academic scholarships are the only kind out there. Sounds to me like it's not intended to be an academic scholarship, but an incentive to keep kids off the streets and productively involved in their communities.

There are plenty of scholarships out there to reward students who get top grades. This one has a different goal in mind, apparently. Criticizing it is like criticizing the American Heart Association for not trying to cure Prostate Cancer.

I can't believe some of you have the audacity to criticise Braylon for this.

Who cares what the minimum GPA is. You are missing the point. Braylon is giving back to the community. And he's probably doing it to the people that need it the most (you tend to get scholorships if your GPA is high anyway).

Not only that, they have other qualifications so it's making the scholarships accessible to those who are not exactly great students, but put forth the effort to be one.

Exactly.

This seems aimed at inner city kids who are willing to work for it. These aren't prep school kids with artificially inflated GPAs. If the carrot at the end of the stick entices one student to make something of themselves, he's done more to help the planet than most.
