Cribbs adds making Hall of Fame to his career checklist

By Sean McClelland

BEREA — Joshua Cribbs made the Pro Bowl last season as a kick returner. His new goal? The Hall of Fame.

"I want to raise the limits for myself," Cribbs explained. "If I say I'm going to make the Hall of Fame, along the way, in trying to reach that goal, I'm going to make a lot of achievements for me and my team.

"I'm trying to be 'the' guy, I'm not trying to be 'a' guy in the NFL."

Uh, better not commission that bust just yet.

Cribbs, trying to convince the Browns to use him more as a receiver, dropped two passes within minutes during the morning minicamp practice Tuesday, June 10.

Oh well, it's only minicamp, as Cribbs was quick to point out.

"It's all the learning process," he said. "We're all getting back into the groove, working out the cobwebs. It's not a game. I have time to correct it."

Cribbs is getting a good look on offense because Donte Stallworth (funeral) and Joe Jurevicius (rehabbing from knee surgery) are unavailable this week.

Early trash talk

Cribbs said he "feels great" about the Browns' opener against the Dallas Cowboys "because everybody thinks (Dallas) is supposed to win."

The teams meet Sept. 7 at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

"Everybody thinks they're the team that can do it all, and that's great," Cribbs said. "Because they're not looking at us. And we love that.

"Who do you think is going to be more relaxed on that day to win the football game? I think there's more pressure on them than us. When you're playing with no pressure on your back, you can do a lot of great things on the football field."

Look who's here

Tight end Kellen Winslow, as promised in a YouTube video by celebrity agent Drew Rosenhaus, indeed made it to minicamp rather than be fined for missing the mandatory event.

Winslow refused interviews, however, adding to the various mysteries surrounding him such as the true extent of his February knee surgery and whether he plans to demand a new contract.

"He showed up, so we'll work with him," head coach Romeo Crennel said. "Maybe if he was with us (for voluntary training) he would've been back to his old self, but he wasn't here, so we have to deal with him now that he's here."

End zones

• Tight end Steve Heiden (back surgery) seemed to be moving well in limited activity.

• He hopes it's better, but Crennel said the defense won't look much different under new coordinator Mel Tucker: "There will be minute changes and differences, but basically it's a 3-4 defense."

• With Brandon McDonald (funeral) excused, recently signed veteran Terry Cousin paired with Eric Wright at cornerback on the No. 1 defense.

• Play of the day: Backup quarterback Brady Quinn hit rookie tight end Martin Rucker in stride down the seam for a long gainer.

Cleveland just won't go away will they? First the low draft pick and now some marginal Pro Bowler running his trap. I hope we win this game and leave them in the rear view mirror for good.

Man, what is it with backup Wideouts running their mouths? We have Crayton who won't shut up, and the Browns have Cribbs now. I can't wait until that game man.

What planet is this guy Cribbs living on? Does he really think that the Dallas Cowboys aren't going to be sky high in the season opener against the Browns in the 2nd game of a Sunday doubleheader. That's essentially a prime time appearance; whose going to be more tight? My bet if any team is tight is the Browns. Cowboys are more use to prime time game appearances then just about any team in football; we also use to other teams playing us like it's there Super Bowl. Combine all that with the reality we've got a much better team on both sides of the ball so I see us getting our first win of the season & it starts in Cleveland. Frankly I'm very optimistic about the whole month of September so long as it's the team we saw most of 07 season with lot of upgrades, particularly on defense.

I doubt very much that ANY NFL team in this day and age would be looking past their first oponent to start the season.

Honestly, that didn't sound much like trash talk to me. He didn't put us down at all -- he just said we were the favorites and he liked that.

Yeah the article called it trash talk, but that's why I put quotes around it. Mild.

Little early for the "we're underdogs and they don't respect us" routine.

That wasn't trash talk, he was correct. I still can't take him seriously though, after his comments about how he's a better returner than Hester I've had a hard time believing anything he has to say.

Maybe the Commanders players should take a note from the Browns on proper excuses for missing OTAs. Heck, Donte Stallworth would have been there except he died. That's a much better excuse than a hangover.

It's never too early to talk trash

What can Brown do for you?

Dallas Cowboys 1-0 to start the season

- actually made me laugh out loud! we need to start a countdown for the first game! I hope he talks some more smack so our revamped special teams can put him on sportscenter for all the wrong reasons! Also, if a certain Adam Jones is given the green light he might be getting some lessons!

He is hardly a scrub guys. If it wasn't for Devin Hester the guy would be HUGE news.

I don't mind this. This is early but it's cool. Keep it up. I like to see the games hyped up that much more.

He shouldn't worry so much about what he will do, or what his offense might do, but be particularly worried about who on that defense plans to cover all the weapons Dallas has to throw to.

I really like this Browns team. My favorites for the AFC title. Although they do have alot of pressure on them. Home opener, 5 primetime games, all these offensive weapons, just missed the playoffs last year. Big things are expected of them aswell.
