BROWNS LAY OFF 18 EMPLOYEES
Posted by Aaron Wilson on January 21, 2009, 10:09 p.m.

The NFL definitely isn’t immune to the harsh consequences of a grim economy, with more proof of that reality materializing in Cleveland this week.

The Browns have laid off 18 employees over the past two days, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The team has laid off director of media information Ken Mather, clevelandbrowns.com staff writer Steve King, and director of team operations Brendan Rowe, a team source told the newspaper, adding that as many as 40 Browns workers could lose their jobs during this upheaval.

“It was a very challenging day for the Browns organization and it’s important to acknowledge the contributions of those who are currently with the Browns as well as those that are leaving,” Browns President Mike Keenan wrote in an e-mail to the Plain Dealer. ”We are not immune to the current economic climate and in order to ensure that our business operates in an honest, efficient and realistic manner, we were faced with extremely difficult decisions.”

The Browns aren’t the only NFL entity having to make tough personnel decisions.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said last month that the league would eliminate about 150 jobs, roughly 14 percent of the league’s work force of nearly 1,100 people, due to the economy. That included parting ways with employees at league headquarters as well as NFL Films, NFL.com, and NFL Network.

“These are difficult and painful steps,” Goodell said a memo distributed to NFL personnel. “But they are necessary in the current economic environment. . . . I would like to be able to report that we are immune to the troubles around us, but we are not.”

Excessively rich guys who are using the current economic situation as their justification to reduce their payroll and pad their wallets with more cash.

How disgusting!!!

Yeah, the NFL is really hurting for money. Maybe we could start a charity fund for them.

I think it is disgustapating because while players make millions, the lower-paid employes get the pink slips.

These are real lives.

The NFL, which makes billions, should be ashamed. Think about that when you buy your next 16-oz beer for $8.50.

Everytime I see one of this 10 million dollars a year guy saying that they need to take away the job of a family bread winner who makes 70,000 a year because " we're not ammune to the economic situation " makes me want to become a dictator and SHOW them what's like to be without a job and no money.

right down condescending for somebody making the money that Goodell does to say " it's a painful situation ".

Well, if it's so painful, here' an idea: take 1 million dollars a year pay cut from your salary. Instead of 10 millions, you'll have to make do with 9 million. With that million, you just saved at least 12-13 jobs for one year.

Next: every owner in the league will take a 5 million dollars a year " pay cut ". That's another 70-80 jobs ( per owner ) that would be saved ( roughly 2,500 jobs ).

Next: Every player making over 10 million dollars a year will take 1 million dollars pay cut. Another 12-13 jobs PER player.. I'm guessing that's another 10,000 jobs.

Just on that small sacrafice, by the end of the day, the NFL would be HIRING people instead of cutting.

So, Goodell, go shove that smoke up somebody else's skirt.

How about when you see "the player" who is making millions a year come out and say, "I need to feed my family".

It's amazing to me how many people have embraced socialism, and worse.

The NFL is in the business of producing football games....not jobs. It's not a welfare agency.

Things like this are life, and I long ago accepted that this is the way things are, but I do agree that it wouldn't be so bad, every once in a while, to see these rich people use a little humanity, and compassion, in their business and realise that if they only make 8 million for year or two, instead of 10 million that they're not exactly going to be hurting for money.

They could use that extra money that they can't possibly be spending all of anyway, unless they're complete morons, to pay their employees they're otherwise having to fire.

But this is reality, not fantasy, and that kind of thing will never happen. You'll never see millionaires, on a large scale anyway, say that "You know what I can get by and have everything I want with 9 million this year just like I could if it was 10 million. I'm going to keep these people in jobs."

Won't ever happen.
