The Cleveland Browns have suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon for an unspecified violation of team rules one day before their season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Browns announced the suspension in a release Saturday. Wide receiver Phil Bates has been promoted from the practice squad to replace Gordon on the active roster.

Both Gordon and rookie Johnny Manziel were absent from the Browns' walk-through Saturday morning, and the team had trouble locating them, a source close to the team told ESPN.com's Pat McManamon.

Gordon also was late getting onto the practice field Friday and emerged from the team's facility for the outdoor workout wearing teammate Travis Benjamin's jersey.

The Browns did not mention Manziel in their release, and it is not clear if the injured quarterback was required to attend the walk-through. Manziel suffered a hamstring injury in last week's loss to Carolina and was ruled out for the finale against Baltimore (9-6), who is battling for a playoff berth.

Sounds like maybe Johnny 8 ball passed something to Gordon and it was completed.

i think it also means he will not be a UFA after the 2015 season.

Conspiracy?

Well he had to give the team a legitimate reason to suspend him. The NFLPA would be all over this filing a grievance, if not.

Not to mention Justin Gilbert:

"Gilbert made just two starts, was passed on the depth chart by undrafted free agent K’Waun Williams and fourth-round pick Pierre Desir, and was benched.

He didn’t perform on the field and had a questionable work ethic away from it."

Not that I'm aware of. But Manziel is on IR and not required to be at the walk-through. My point is the NFLPA is surely aware of Gordon's FA status and the implications of missing this game. Whatever happened had to be a legitimate reason to suspend. Otherwise it will be challenged by the NFLPA . But I'm pretty sure active players missing a Saturday walk-through and not having a legitimate excuse for being basically MIA is grounds for team discipline.

Manziel isn't suspended.

It's definitely a contract thing.

We're not having this conversation if Gordon shows up to practice. He didn't and the team reacted whether they had his contract in mind or not. The punishment is well within reason.
