when you can't make a decision on what defense you should be running based on your personnel, it's time to clean house, blow it up and start over.

Agreed. But i think the team felt comfortable with who they had coming into the season. They expected Ratfliff and Spencer to be back healthy. Nobody thought Ware would completely fall off like he has. We looked to have solid depth on the line with crawford, bass, and lissemore. Injuries derailed any chance for this defense to be successful.

But, at the same time, players are still not winning the one on one battles they should. You expect Brandon Carr to be able to shut down guys like earl boykin and andre holmes. You expect Demarcus Ware to beat one on one blocking at least a couple times a game, especially against rookies and backups. Heck, i even saw forte block him one on one that monday night game once or twice.

Bottom line though. It doesn't matter what defense you run. If you can't get any pressure on the quarterback you will not stop anybody.

It is really depressing that two guys you hoped to be cornerstone defenders have been bad this year (Carter and Mo). I thought Carter would excel in the 4-3. Thought he would use his speed to make plays in the backfield while also being able to drop into coverage and run with the elite tight ends. That has not happened at all. It really makes you wonder if he one good solid stretch of play last year was a mirage or if he can repeat that level of play again? I don't know what is up with him. Although, I had much higher hopes for Carter and Mo than being in a battle with Ernie Sims and Scandrick to win those starting jobs. Not even mentioning their lack of plays when they are on the field either.

That's why I go back to the 3-4 after this season.

This Tampa 2 has been a debacle and I think we can salvage at least a year with what we have and could have next season.

Lee can play in either scheme if he can stay healthy, but I think Ware and Carter are so much better in a 3-4 defense.

And Spencer may be looking and needing another year to prove he can still play. He would likely benefit from the 3-4 as well.

And the man cornerbacks that we signed and drafted would do better there as well in my opinion.

But we would still need the linemen up front, regardless of scheme.
I fully agree.

I hated the change in the first place. I thought Less and Carter were second only to Willis and Bowman as the leagues top inside LB's. Of course health is an issue, but that's truw no matter what defense your playing.

Ware was always more suited as an edge rushing LB. Spencer also thrived.

As for our CB's, their strengths also complement the 3-4 scheme. That's why we got them in the first place.

Jerry should call a press conference, say the switch to Kiffin's defense was all Larry Lacewells fault and he's going back to the 3-4 defense he drafted for over a decade. Find a space eating NT in the draft and if Spencer can be signed for cheap, do it.

broaddus hinted at him and eberflus having beef. either way, he's just another of a long line of soft underachieving tar heels.

Yeah Robert Quinn sure is soft, and that guy Julius Peppers, and quinten Coples is terrible in that Jets front 7...I can keep going if you like

Could it be that he is playing out of position......played really well at inside linebacker in a 3-4 but has struggled outside in a 4-3....might be good to see him play inside again

I agree. Maybe next season if Sean Lee is the starter while Bruce Carter would make a great backup at MLB. Note: Lee could be gone for the year again with his new neck injury. With Glass being down so many games year after year the Cowboys could have a player who did nothing at the strong side LB now go to the inside where he played better in 2012. Wow, this almost makes sense not including the money spent on this position.

Update:

Bruce Carter was practicing in full pads with the team today. Looks like he should be good to go on sunday barring any setbacks.

I know he's struggled, but this is great news. It gets Lawrence off the field!

hopefully they lit a fire under bruce butt. If he doesn't give full effort they will find someone who will. And what's up with heath starting over Wilcox? Heath sucks. Can we please get Wilcox back in there. Seems like we rotating safeties. Sometimes you see him in there. Sometimes you don't.

I was about to say, 'isn't robert quinn like leading the league in sacks and in contention for DPOY?'

Yeah let's just ignore all the great players out of unc and make a generalization about the University based on Marvin Austin, maybe Bruce, maybe Hakeem. But we all as fans make kneejerk reactions on here, including myself.

Still not ready to give up on the guy.

If he's playing it is better than seeing Lawrence taking all of those snaps.

Holloman is taking the Mike spot this week, so my guess is Carter is on the weak side since Wilber has rightfully earned the strong side.
