Brunell Reluctant to Redo Salary Again

By Jason La Canfora
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 1, 2006; Page E02

The Washington Commanders met with representatives for quarterback Mark Brunell over the weekend in an attempt to restructure his salary and create additional space under the salary cap by the NFL deadline on Friday.

Brunell's agent, Leigh Steinberg, rejected the team's proposal, sources said, and although the sides have not negotiated since, the Commanders could make another attempt to rework the contract before Friday.

The Commanders have $115.4 million devoted to their 2006 salary cap, and must get under what is projected to be about a $96 million cap by 12:01 a.m. Friday if there is not an extension of the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association. Without an extension, the Commanders face as tough a challenge as any team in the league in meeting the cap. With an extension, the cap figure could approach $108 million.

Brunell, who signed a seven-year, $43 million contract, including a guaranteed $8.6 million signing bonus, in 2004, has a $4 million base salary for 2006, second highest on the team. The Commanders had hoped to convert his base salary into bonuses and diminish his cap figure by several million dollars, but Steinberg declined, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

Leigh Steinberg's career as an agent would be over if he allowed one of his clients to agree to taking a paycut on good faith that he'll be paid back later.

Why wouldn't you want a big bonus now right before the CBA goes away?

Because the team could just cut him in order to not pay for this year and to save up for the "uncapped" year.

The Commanders need about a dozen players to restructure their contracts -- they wouldn't necessarily have to take pay cuts, but they must change the structure of their contracts.

If more players refuse to do that, they're in a HEAP of trouble. Brunell wouldn't have saved much, anyway, but it could be a bad omen for the Skins.

Didn't upshaw also recommend to agents that they NOT restructure any existing contracts

He recommended that they wait to do it, which would put more pressure on the teams to get a CBA deal done. Now that that the CBA deal apparently has fallen through, the agents will just do what they think is best for their clients. If it gets their client more money, or the same money sooner, they'll probably do it.

So what happens in a scanario where players refuse to renegotiate?

Tell me a nice story Adam :)

Yeah but he would already be paid. Now he might get cut and not be paid.

It costs them more to cut him than it does to keep him. Brunell has all the leverage

Plus they've been shopping Ramsey to anyone that will listen, so they must have thought Brunell would play ball with them. Now what do they do, they can't cut Brunell and go back to Ramsey.

Wait! Let me get this right ...I read this thread as saying the Commanders GM are asking Mark Brunell to take a pay cut to allow the Commanders to acquire a young QB/FA veteran, who could potentially take his job?!

...don't mind that QB behine the curtains, just sign on the dotted line Mark.

...sure we'll pay you back, as soon as you take us to the SB.

...it's just a small formality; oh, by the way, you still have to earn your position this year.

That could be asking just a bit too much!
