#cowboys can't draft top-5 elite O-lineman at 18? I've got 27 years of research says they can. @1053thefan http://cbsloc.al/15zQdR9

@fishsports I would be interested in your study how many QBs RBs WRs went in those drafts before 18. Because those positions are not big now

mike fisher ‏@fishsports 13m
@JoeDeMayo4 @bryanbroaddus I might contend teams find QBs, for instance, more alluring closer we get to turning in that card.

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 9m
@fishsports @joedemayo4 I didn't think it was possible either but after watching Warmacks workout, I don't think he slides. I believe 5 go.

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 5m
@JoeDeMayo4 @fishsports I think it might be the safety. To be honest if you are fan of trade back you want Austin on the board too.

mike fisher ‏@fishsports 3m

.@BryanBroaddus meaning hope vacarro/tavon both there and trade down just a few spots

Bryan Broaddus ‏@BryanBroaddus 40s
@fishsports: If you want to dance back you need talent on the board

Just don't see it. I have no doubts that all 3 tackles will be gone, but both guards? I'd be shocked. Unless a team views Cooper as a definite center option I can't see him going top 17.

It would be quite an anomaly if it happens.

Anything's possible. But it'd be really surprising to have two OGs off the board in the first 17 picks.

Broaddus' expertise is more in evaluating talent than in predicting how a draft is going to go down. He's just guessing like the rest of us. It's still a safe bet that, even in a weak market, two QBs will be in that top 17.

There's just been 1 offensive guard taken before the 18th pick since 1997. That was Steve Hutchinson, who barely squeeked in at #17 in 2001. Now you're counting on two going in the same draft. Seems highly unlikely.

I remember when we got Gurode in the 2nd round in 2002, and how no one could believe he fell out of the first. I respect Broaddus' POV as a former scout, but there is a difference between a scout and a front office decision maker. They are completely different jobs with different responsibilities. Scouts gather information. They may even slap a grade. Front office people are the decision makers. The e big picture people who have to imagine how they're going to allocate resources to an entire 53 man roster. Right now during the Combine and workouts, it's the scouts time in the sun. The real decision makers won't fully have their say until mid-April, during the pre-draft meetings when all the voices in the organization are in the same room and the boards get made. Just because scouts slap a Top 15 pick grade on a guard doesn't mean that's where the front office decision makers want to allocate their resources, as DeCastro showed last year.

I agree with you, although as a huge believer in positional value the reciever, corner, tackle and defensive end markets are very compressed right now and are closer to the elite guards. However, when a truly elite skill set actually hits the market at those positions (Mike Wallace, Harvin, Revis) big contracts still happen.

I desperately want Richardson because the 1st round of draft or dumb luck (Melton) are about the only ways you get a player like that.

Don't forget that the allocation of talent (or lack thereof) at other positions also dictate how the draft falls. Last year was the year of the QB, whereas this year there is arguably not a QB worthy of a first round pick. I personally think that the top end talent this year is a step down (or two) from prior years. Having a top end pick this year is not nearly as much of an advantage as it has been in prior years.
